At some point in the not-so-distant future, my old wooden stable block is going to give up the ghost. I'm trying to think what I'd like to put in its place but struggling. I want 3-5 stables that will really just be feeding/handling areas - the horses live out all year. It would be useful for these to be flexible in case someone does need to stay in for any reason - at the moment I can make two stables into one big one for box rest. I also want to incorporate a field shelter - needs to be high enough for tractor to access to move haylage in and muck out. Maybe a more open tie-up area too, and rug storage; possibly tack or feed storage. Not sure if I want a metal portal-span style building with all of that inside or more modular wooden sections. Probably just earth floor throughout, or at least the main parts the horses will use. Interested in ideas for good/clever layout, any extras or things that shouldn't be included, how to make the best of a budget, any other thoughts!

first thing to consider is your planning situation.
Are you in a conservation area.
Have you had a look on your council's planning website to see what other applications have been made in your parish/ward? Also look at the decisions on them - Passed or not.
How near are your neighbours? How visible is the site from nearby housing/roads and from a distance?

This is what I would have if I had the opportunity.
It would be brick/stone built for 4 horses, one stable in each corner and an airy track through the middle, all under a slate roof. There would be a store room between each pair of stables for feed and tack.
Surrounding the two halves of the block would be a fenced in area, split into 2, so each stable would have their own outside space. Each stable would have a stable door into the central space, and another one to their outdoor bit.
So no practical advice, just my dream set up :-)

I think first you need to decide what you actually want to be able to do with/in the building. Think about keeping the same footprint, which will make the PP issue much simpler - you might even be able to 'repair' the existing building so that it suits your needs better. Would you prefer one big space that you can divide if you need to, or would you prefer separate stables that you can open up to make a bigger space if you need to?
