I would replace it but when it happened to me recently the girl refused to pay for it, said that it was just horses playing. There is a pony that goes around ripping them, grrr
Mine was a brand new masta rug, cost me over £60 and i could only watch as the wee sod grabbed it and pulled, nipping my own horse causing him to run!!
Nope sorry but I wouldn't. My livery yard has a contract whereby people all sign that anything brought on to my yard, does so at the owners risk - that includes horses and rugs.
I would probably feel bad, but I wouldn't offer to fix the rug
. Chex has had tons of his rugs ripped, but after watching them I found its because he winds the horses up until they lash out at him, usually grabbing a bit of his rug and tearing it
. I just buy rugs with a high denier now, and he's stopped being such a pain so rugs are mostly intact
I have had loads of rugs trashed by horses bullying my wimpy lot over the years, it has never once occurred to me to ask the owners for replacement or repairs. As far as I am concerned, horses will be horses and what happens in the field is out of the control of the owner, be it ripped rugs or wounds.
Unless, said horse is a known bully and then shouldn't be in a situation where s/he can injure others.
no i wouldn't repair/replace. In the same way if my horse kicked another I wouldn't be footing the vet's bill. When it comes down to it you can't be responsible for what your horse does when it's loose in the field.
i would offer to repair and just give it to my gran (she makes boat covers!) alice has chunks out of her new rug where her boyfirend was getting a bit kinky when grooming over the gate!
This happened to our gelding twice within a week at our old livery yard, someone elses big mare trashed both his outdoor rugs trying to push him around. The owner said she would pay for them because they were completely ruined but she never did, we had to separate him and replace the rugs ourselves.
If any of mine trashed someone elses I would pay for repair or replacement, its only good manners.
All horses play and damage each others rug....however...lol,the horse mine used to be out with was a git,he bullied them all,i started off with the weatherbeetas(ripped to bits),decided to shell out good money on ballistic etc etc,the damn thing still ripped it,i actually watched it charge from one side of the field to the other just to bite him(it had some major issues i think
)i was devastated as not made of money(not through play i might add),the owner was asked if we could separate them, plenty of land, answer "no"!!Wouldnt pay towards new rug either!Had that been me and i knew it was my horse being damn right evil,i would have helped toward cost of new and split em up!!ANSWER to my prayers...new yard, happy unbullied horse AND no ripped rugs!!!
My old horses friend used to trash all his rugs in the stable as well as the field so I never thought anything of it. He used to rip his rugs off completely. Then one day I was watching them in the field and while playing my horse was rearing and then pulling the rug off with his front legs. I didn't admit too it, but he was getting as goo as he got and I think my rugs were just better quality so they satyed on!
If it was a one off then no probably wouldn't feel obliged to pay but if my horse made a habit of trashing other horses rugs then yes would feel had tp replace/repair but would probably look to moving to a non rug field if poss or look at ways to solve problem. We have a problem at our yard re this. One horse is well known for trashing rugs.It apparently has been known for it and partner in crime to pull an end each and literally rip rug in half.
It is annoying if on receiving end tho cos I know I could not afford to replace a rug every week and would be really mad if it came to this!!
I would offer to repair it IF it genuinely was my horses fault, like say if they tied their horse up near mine and theres went for mine so mine retaliated and their rug got damaged then I WOULDNT see it as my fault as their horses was the agressor.
Last night 2 of the horses in the barn went for beau as I led him to his stable, one on either side - as he avoided one the 2nd got him righ on the back and left scrapes on his stable rug - it was covered in gunk and his back was raised! I was NOT impresed! If it happens again I'm asking to move stables as if they went for and damaged my tack as I lead him out to ride I would be VERY annoyed, and also if Beau gets another bite mark I will be annoyed
I'd offer to replace the rug or have it repaired, unless it was an expensive rug most people would say 'don't bother' in my opinion. If it was a brand new expensive rug and someone else horse was seen aggressively trashing it (attacking my horse) I would ask the owner to get it repaired.
I have a rug trasher, luckily he only trashes his own rugs though, but it's still very costly.
I was recently lent a rug, horse has decided to rip a large hole in it (im gutted as he's never done that before) and I'm getting a replacement as it was a nice gesture of her to lend me the rug as my boy was freezing and didnt have a rug light enough for the changeable weather. I would feel incredibly rude if I didnt at least offer to replace it!
