My horses trough is filled from a borehole. The water is unfiltered and is brown with a film on it. I've been told this is iron and manganese? and should clear (the tap was only put on recently)..Is this ok or are my horses being poisoned!!!

We used to have a bore hole at my old house but all the water was filtered. We are in Devon too and there is alot of iron in the ground.

The water to the house is filtered and I used to use the same water but I had to connect three hoses and it had to travel up some serious hills to get to my field and took ages. I've had a tap put in at the borehole which is the other side of the fence to my trough. Its great and takes minutes to fill and will eventually get a ballcock fitted but this water isn't filtered. It looks so horrid I just wondered if my horses would get iron overload or even if there is such a thing!!

Is it just the tap that is new??? or all the pipework from the borehole?? I you have old galvanised iron pipework it is probably from that (rather the in the water that is being abstracted). No idea if will be poisonous, but will definately have horrible metalic taste, so the horses might not drink it any way.
