Ive kindly been offered a friends trailer to use as and when needed.

Does anyone know how insurance and breakdown cover would work?

Am I best getting my own cover?

You would get breakdown cover from PRP, its about quid, and if you are an RAC/AA member its 46 (I think).

Insurance, check your policy but I would think towing will be covered third party by your car insurance, but for the value of the trailer you would need to check with your friend as to what their policy said. My friend's insurance just covers her trailer so I didn't need additional insurance.

You would need your own insurance unless you are towing with their vehicle and on their insurance.

Also remember you are responsible for the trailer being road worthy and the correct weight etc, not them.

I chose my insurance policy so that my friend would be insured using my trailer as she occasionally takes my girl out. I made sure she had breakdown cover for the trailer/horse though as my horse rescue only covers when I am towing with my vehicle.

Equine Rescue Services will do breakdown recovery for your horse in the trailer as long as you are a member of AA/RAC.

Most horse insurance companies will do cover for you, so call your own horse insurer and say you are borrowing a trailer an need it insured whilst it is with you. Am sure they will cover you as you are an existing client!

Thanks everyone.

Im an AA member so I can sort breakdown cover.

The insurance may be a bit tricky as I will be borrowing someone elses 4x4 to tow the borrowed trailer!

Don't forget though, your AA cover won't include horse breakdown. As in they won't send out a horse lorry to pick up your horse if needed. That will be fine if you are just doing local stuff and can get someone from your yard to come out, but I wouldn't take my horse out without having proper horse breakdown cover.
