Would you be happy to hire/let someone borrow your clippers?!

I don't know whether it would be considered rude/cheeky of me to ask my friend whether I can hire her clippers off her?!

She hasn't clipped any of her horses this year and I just want to run over my boy with a full clip and only own dog clippers myself (for trimming) and want to get him done ASAP and capable/happy doing him myself (quite enjoy clipping haha) and he's not particularly hairy

do you think it's a bit cheeky of me if I ask if I can borrow (although I will offer to pay her) her clippers :S

if it's not a crime and none of you are appalled by me even thinking of it how much do you think I should offer her?!

I just don't know whether it's a reasonable question/offer or whether it's a bit rude :S

Thanks for any replies

Before I got my own, I would regularly borrow friends clippers. I was always careful, and would usually pay for the blades to be sharpened (less than £10) and/or clip their horse(s) for them in return. So long as you're careful, and aren't clipping loads of horses I think that its fine, especially if as you say she's not really using them!

I suppose if you wanted to pay a bit more for the hire of them, perhaps something like half of what it might cost to get someone to do it for you? (Around me a full clip seems to range from £25-60!).

i wouldn't be offended at all- offer her say £10-£20 based on fact that it would cost £40 to get him clipped by someone else :)

Im going to put a spanner in the works then - I have been asked to lend my clippers and said no

I think it depends how good a friend you are, the people who asked to lend mine i didn't know particularly well, and they had never clipped before, i was concerned that my clippers would be damaged, so therefore said no, sorry as theyre an expensive bit of kit.

However if it was someone i knew well & they could clip & had clipped before, i wouldn't object to lending them out, providing they had the blades sharpened afterwards :)

No harm in asking... As the saying goes 'shy bairns get nowt'

I am very selective about who I lend mine out to (infact I have only ever lent them to one person to clip her very nervous horse)

just be warned (and no offence to your friend here intended!) but someone on our yard who doesnt have her own clippers got the 'clipper man' out (who i think was £40 for a full clip) and her horses ended up with ringworm.

We dont lend our clippers out par se but will clip other peoples horses on the yard ourselves cheaper than most.

it may sound mean but no i would not lend my clippers. for a number of years i ran a clipping service so my clippers need to be perfect . every season as well as proper maintenance and service i would invest in some new equipment and usually worked with 4 or 5 sets of clippers plus trimmers etc so quite a big expense. yes friends often asked if they could borrow my clippers~~~~they knew i had a huge box full of them! and i used to happily go and clip their horses for free but would not lend the clippers. this arrangement suited everyone .

To be honest, if they were my WORK clippers, I would definitely NOT loan them out. I'm a dog groomer and I have clippers but never ever loan them out *unless to another groomer who I know will look after them the same standard that I do. But I wouldn't loan them out for clipping a horse, for example.

However, I have wee trimmers on the yard that I use to trim ears/heels/muzzle and those I'm happy to lend out.

I wouldn't ask someone who clipped for a living to give me a shot of their equipment - but smoeone who just has them for their own horse, I would ask.

I might be mean, but I wouldn't lend my clippers out. They cost me nearly £300 and I couldn't afford to replace or do without them. I am guessing that if someone hasn't got their own, then they can't afford to replace mine.

I have clipped other people's horses for them, but wouldn't lend them out.

I suppose I'm in the middle here - I've lent mine and not lent them (if that makes sense).

If she is your friend and you clearly state you will pay to sharpen the blades and immediately replace / repair them if you break them, then ask her! She can only say no ;)

I've said no on occasions where I didn't really trust the person to replace them if they broke them (for example dropped them or the horse kicked out). Other times, when I've been asked to clip a horse for money and can't be bothered - I've lent them to trusted folk.
