Excuse my ignorance, because I'm a lorry girl :)

Can I (when I say I, I mean my OH here, cause I have no towing license) borrow a trailer from a friend, put my OHs 4x4 plates on it, cover it with insurance for the day and legally tow it?

Answers on a postcard please?

If you are borrowing a trailer with the permission of your friend you should be covered on their trailer insurance.

Just ask your friend to give their insurance company a call to check.

Mine was covered by Petplan Equine and was insured for friends to use with my permission :)

The trailer does need to be insured in case it gets damaged.

The liability aspect of trailer towing is on the vehicle. However not all policies cover towing so do check. This will not cover you for theft damage or fire. I'm pretty sure you cannot insure a trailer you don't own. If the trailer is already insured for the above by the owner then I believe its irrelevant who is using it so long as its not for hire or reward unless it is insured for the purpose. Also be aware of the requirement for additional breakdown cover as standard car policies will cover the trailer but not the horses! Stuck on the hard shoulder with horses isn't funny and without cover is VERY costly to resolve!

Also, as I found to my cost, breakdown cover is just that, if you have an accident the cover doesn't apply and unless you can persuade your insurance company to pay then you will be left with the bill to recover your horse(s).

I'd imagine he'll be all covered for that, as he tows his sheep :) good point though - i hadn't thought of that side of it!

Shame the horse wont fit in the sheep trailer really!! :D
