Why O why do folk think they can borrow stuff without asking!!! GRR...............

I have no problem with they act of burrowing BUT WHY CAN'T FOLKS SAY

Got to yard to find shaving pile has gone down AGAIN!! second time in same week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grr i can see myself lossing my temper over it.....

or am i muppet for buying in bulk!

thx for rant - wandering off to grumble, grumble, grumble.....

Just an idea here might not be practical,

Get a perminant marker or something and number all your bales of shavings and use them in numerical order, (make sure you tell everyone on yard your system) that way everyone will know that you count your bales it will be harder for them to take one with out you noticing , ooh and write it down on a piece of paper what number you are on.. you know make a big thing of it,, then if anymore go missing take your evidence to the YO and explain to them whats going on, and hopefully they would be able to help you sort it... or if its really that bad, move yards? store shavings at home maybe? ..

I do feel for you, I work hard to buy things for my horse as i am sure you do. Luckilly we dont have that trouble on our yard but i can sympathise with you why should people take stuff without asking i mean you wouldnt walk into your neighbours house while they were at work and eat their dinner out the fridge would you!

people steal if they think they can get away with it. it's horrible, but i have no idea what you can do.
i knew a livery yard owner who got so sick of the liveries helping themselves to oats out of his bin that he put a rat-trap in there... cured the problem... maybe you need to alarm the shavings pile!

Damn cheek if you ask me - Id do what Betty has suggested, it would really gripe me as its expensive enough keeping horses without people helping themselves!

thx thats what i'm going to do lunchtime, but i feel really childish that i'm reduced to numbering bales!!

As i say i don't mind if folks run out if need bale to do bed, but pl txt me or leave note, that not asking to much??????

ps have txted person and ask her to replace the 2 bales asap

In a yard I was at a few years ago, a sack of feed would last less than a week for one 13.2 fat pony because the teenagers would all help themselves to my feed (I was the only one on the yard who used pony nuts!), hay would go missing, grooming kit & mucking out tools would go AWOl, the communal wheelbarrow would regularly be left full of muck but the final straw was when my saddle got 'borrowed' when I had just cleaned it and put back covered in mud. That's before I even mention the extreme amount of bitching that went on. Hmmmmmmm! I wonder why I'm not at that yard still?!?

We don't have this problem as we all have our own separate store rooms at the back of our stables. I would never borrow something without asking first though, it's just really rude.
Looks like the numbering system would be the best and you shouldn't feel childish, those other people should feel ashamed!

Surely taking feed/shavings without permission and not replacing it is stealing, not borrowing? I might be inclined to point that out too. Taking stuff and putting it back dirty is unacceptable, especially something like a saddle! People have even posted on here saying other liveries have 'borrowed' their horse without asking - I would go nuts if someone did that. I can't believe the cheek of some people. Borrowing something to try before you buy is different but if people need to borrow equipment regularly then maybe then they should buy their own.

Call a yard meeting??

Explain the cost to everyone and make them all feel guilty, explain that you love the yard etc, but this is making your life missereble... lay it on really thick, if this continues might have to sell horse.. that sort of thing.. make them think twice before taking something.. or the extreme option, go and take everyones shaving and leave a note saying how you feel now is how i felt when my stuff went missing you will find your stuff in.. x place but please if you want to borrow my stuff again just ask! dont just take!

Fallen foul of so called borrower before, nothing better than common thieves!

We have the same problem at our yard.

We kinda know who it is that is doing it but we cant say anything until we catch them in the act. My friend has put notes in her feed bins to say in the nicest possible way "bu**er off and buy your own. they have no self concience as they still take the food knowing that people have noticed it going missing.

Great idea for the rat/mouse traps im so going to do it hehe.

I totally agree with above. I have no problem with people borrowing as long as they a) put it back or b) tell me. Mind, yesterday I was accused of taking someone's 'special' lead rope. No! Why would I?

We had a 'borrower' on our yard. She had a pony there for over a year, it was on DIY livery & she hadn't got a barrow, muck fork or even a saddle.......how did she manage for over 12 months????

I am a cow for borrowing my sisters stuff - but NEVER that of folk I dont know! I noticed recently that my feed is going down awful fast - a bag lasted a month last time, but I only got this one just over a week ago and its already half way down!!
Unfortunately the culprits all to often are the kids, they just don't get that they shouldnt use stuff they haven't paid for!
