A friend has very kindly offered to lend me the use of her trailer as and when I need it. I'm the kind of person that if I break something etc, I always replace it/fix it etc, so I want to make sure I'm 'covered' if I do borrow it.

Does anyone know if third party liability on horse insurance policy would cover me if horse damaged trailer? I will phone insurance co and check specifically with them, but wondered if anyone knew. Also, I have RAC breakdown cover on vehicle, but would that extend to if I was towing? If anyone can think of anything else I haven't thought of, please let me know!

Im in a similar postion to you and have the use of a friends trailer. I added it onto my Horse Insurance policy which is with NFU and costs me £54 for the year. I am a member of the RAC too but if you want the Trailer cover its a separate thing. Its through the RAC and Ive just renewed it, costs £45 for the year. Covers you if you break down, recovers the horses if the trailer or car isnt repairable. Very good value for money. If you look on the RAC website it should be on there.

I know E&L do insurance for trailer hire, but as you are borrowing it's a slightly different thing. I have a vague, dim and distant thought that you cannot have two insurance policies for the same item. I don't know why I think that but I guess its something linked to potential fraud and two insurance companies paying out for one incident. It might be worth asking your friend to check their policy as to what happens if someone else uses the trailer. May be you will be able to be added as "named user" and just pay the additional cost for changing the policy?

Thanks both for replies. I will speak to PetPlan this week and see what they say, and will ask re the two insurance policies thing. That does vaguely ring a bell though for some reason. I know some insurance policies offer breakdown cover, but whether PetPlan do I don't know...

Good suggestion though re named user on the policy, I will ask her.

A friend of mine was going to lend me a trailer but this is what happened. She was insured with NFU and apparently unless the trailer is attached to the car which policy it is attached to, with a named driver at the wheel then no its not insured. I couldn't just borrow her trailer for the day using my dads car because if the horse damaged the trailer or if someone rammed the back of the trailer it wouldn't be insured.

I dont know who told you this at NFU but its not right. I have my Disco insured with NFU and also my little Micra. When I wanted to add the trailer to the policy they added it to the Micra. When I said the Micra wouldn't ever be able to tow it they said it didn't matter which car it was insured with. The cover also included breakdown and recovery.

Its possible it was an excuse for not lending the trailer out, I must admit I dont like anyone taking mine.
