Can anyone tell me when buying blackoil sunflower seeds is there a specific "type" i need to go for???? Are they the ones they sell as bird feed???? Sorry if its a thick question.

I buy a 25kg sack of BOSS from the feed merchant for £8. Lasts months and months for my four horses (and I do feed the birds with them too!

As soon as the feed merchants realise we're feeding them to horses, the price will no doubt hike.

All you have to do is make sure they are the totally black ones, as per their name, and not the black/white striped ones.

You must have expensive suppliers then - I pay about £9 too....although I think my bags are only 20 kgs

yeah I pay £10 for a big bag from my supplier who thinks I am nuts feeding them to my horse!!! he supplies a lot of people who buy feed for pigeons and poultry etc and just wouldnt believe me when I said they were for my horses.

They seemed even cheaper this time because they're normally only 20kg sacks so I was quite surprised how large the bag was for the price.

Like the others have mentioned, my feed merchants think I'm barmy to feed them to the horses too.

You need to find new suppliers if that's the prices you're being charged. My feed merchants do supply to retail outlets, but they must be making a profit themselves on that figure.

I honestly havent heard of using them before?

I think of them in a similar way to Linseed Oil - good for general bloom, coat and feet.

They are full of oil (as their name suggests) and a good source of slow release energy. They're like the marmite of the horse world.....horses either love them or hate them.

But what do you DO with them? Will horses eat them husks & all, or do they have to be shelled?

I'd like to give mine oil but they REALLY don't like it mixed with their feed; I suppose its like being obliged to eat greasy stew...UGH... and I've never found a way round that. I've often thought that sunflower seeds would be a palatable alternative but didn't know how to get them in quantity cheaply enough unless they had the husks on: I'd no idea people were actually using them.

So, can horses safely crunch them up whole?

Seriously, I just add a handful into each feed and neither pony has shown any probs munching them

suppose so; I was just a bit afraid they'd cause a blockage or something, or else come out the other end whole, and seed the dungheap with sunflowers. Actually that would be an improvement.
