boston terrier- not a terrier?

Tibetan terriers are all purpose dogs but when the first westerners saw them they reminded them of terriers back home, hence the name.

Interesting questions, and I haven't the faintest idea, of the answers. I suspect that most breeds of dog have evolved because man had a use for them; hounds, guard breeds, gundogs and terriers etc.

Was the Boston terrier ever a dog bred for the work of a terrier, or was it, as gemin1eye has said, just a label, as in the case of the Tibetan Terrier, which was simply bred as were some others, the Peke perhaps, as an ornament?

and what about the cavaliers ? they are toys not spaniels, but I thought they were king charles spaniel, or cavalier king charles spaniels?>

When you look at pictures of the original cavaliers you can see very clearly that they came from 'proper' working spaniel stock :) Blame the Duchess of Marlborough for turning them into lap dogs around the time of Queen Anne :D

Why we have to have CKCS and King Charles spaniels is beyond me though, it confuses so many people

Yes :) Cavaliers are a lot more common, the King Charles spaniels are slightly smaller, with a more domed skull, shorter in the nose, and an undershot (reverse scissor bite) jaw.

If you watched Crufts on TV, the charlie (King Charles spaniel) was the one which won the toy group, it was a tricolour (black, white and small bits of tan) whereas the cavalier was a blenheim (brown and white)
