I'm thinking of trying a different joint supplement for the little yellow pony. She seems a bit stiffer this winter than previously and a friend suggested boswellia. She currently gets Turmergold and Extraflex, would you recommend boswellia instead of one or both of them? She was diagnosed with coffin joint arthritis years ago but it has been kept well under control.

It’s working very well on my mini. He won’t eat anything extra in his feed so gets it in a capsule mixed in.

You appear to be feeding two of a similar thing currently, so you could just feed one (Extraflex) and add it to that.

I use Equicure Flex powder. I was feeding Yumove but vet suggested Boswellia alongside possibly Bosmerix or similar. The Flex combined key ingredients from both these.

I use the feedmark Boswellia supplement on my 19 year old Connie. I have found it works better than any other joint supplement I have tried. He has not been diagnosed with any specific arthritis issues but is just a little stiffer, than when he was younger, coming out the stable in the morning.

I found Boswellia more effective than turmeric on my Connie with coffin joint arthritis.

I do suspect different horses react differently to different supplements so it's a bit of trial and error. I always seam to go back to the boswellia

I use Feedmark's BestFlex HA which has all the usual things plus boswelia and seems to help more than anything else

I've changed from Feedmark boswellia, which doesn't state the % boswellic acid, to Riaflex Equine Boswellia Serrata 65% for all my 3. The improvement in all 3 is remarkable.

It's pricey but they do regularly have offers. It lasts ages.

Our potent Boswellia is free from FEI Prohibited substances and is much stronger than a standard Boswellia where no Boswellic Acid % is listed.

I discussed it with my vet. She rates Bosmerix, which is a boswellia containing POM which has been very effective for a number of her patients. It's very expensive, though. As I'd already bought the Riaflex boswellia we agreed that I'd crack on with it but try the Bosmerix on wonky mare if I needed heavier guns.

She is doing so well post her recent bilateral hock medications (arthramid + steroid) and the Riaflex boswellia that I'm keeping her on it.

Great suggestions, thanks everyone.

Turmergold has MSM and glucosamine in it, would you feed that and the boswellia, or just try the boswellia on its own?

Have you considered bosmerix. I have one on it and am pretty impressed.

I second this Bozmerix is the only joint supplement i ever used that worked. I’ve several friends that says the same. Ive tried glucosamine, tumeric, superflex etxc… very impressed with bozmerix. It works as if my horse is on bute (but it’s not bute its not a drug only a joint supplement) usually you can buy from the vets, but i think you can get online also). It has bosweilla in it as one of the ingredients. it is more expensive (i think 85 pounds per 60 sachets which last me 2 months), but i would just use that on its own which might work out the same as if you paid tumergold and Boswellia on its own (not sure how much these are)

OK, Bosmerix is ordered! Expensive, but if it works it will be worth it. Thanks for the advice everyone. 😊

Thought id resurrect this old thread rather than start another, how soon after starting to feed Boswellia did you see an improvement (if any)

I ended up feeding Bosmerix, I think it started working fairly quickly (2 or 3 weeks) but I've now switched to Bosflex. She was on Bosmerix for a good few months, if she gets stiff again over winter I'll put her back on it.
