I am about to try this for horse and self.
He is off cortaflex now, as part of his all singing and dancing new diet (never think that forums don't influence your thinking! :) and have read some good stuff about boswellia but there seem to be two varieties available and I want to know if they are both equally effective as anti inflammatories.

Can anyone tell me if boswellia serrata is worth the double cost of the other?
Thanks!

Hi I put my horse on this about 6 weeks ago as my YM recommended it as an alternative to vetrofen which I had been recommended to try by my horse's physio as he is getting abit stiff in his hind legs (just wear and tear apparently).

It does seem to have made a difference. He kept going disunited in canter on the right rein and when going into canter on that rein on the lunge he sort of bunny hopped . Well neither has happened since he has been on the natures bute (brand of boswellia we get from Pegasus health) so I think it has really helped. Both he and my YMs horse have certainly been feeling very well since they've been on it!

Oh I ought to mention that he did have some work from the physio on his back and pelvis just before he went on it so that will have made some difference but she said not all of it could be attributed to this so I do think the boswellia has helped :)

I give Boswellia Serrata to my horse who has arthritis in her fetlock as well as spavin - not sure if it makes a difference, but along with all the other treatment she has had, she has come sound. :)

Tried the boswellia from pegasus health and TBH didn't notice a blind bit of difference for the cob with arthritic hocks. Now using turmeric in addition to his linseed and have noticed he is no longer very stiff if he has been resting a leg for a while. It's dirt cheap and it's obviously making him slightly more comfortable even on the icy mornings we have had (plus it's the only thing that disguises danilon when he has it!):D

I've used Boswellia Serrata (from Natural Horse Supplies) for a couple of years for my Shetland who has an arthritic knee and it has made a real difference.

Another who has used it with great results.

I used it on an arthritic T.B (hock spavins) and it kept him sound.

I also use it on my NF pony who broke his hip as a two year old and sometime struggles a bit. I really notice the difference with him if he doesn`t have it.

I use Pegasus Health too, I feed him this ---> http://www.pegasushealth.com/horse-supplements/manufacturer/pegasus-health/fleximover @ 20gms a day and then have a tub of straight Boswellia to 'top him up' if he works particularly hard.

Much prefer it to Devils Claw products, gentle on their tummies and more effective :-)

hmmm - I'm going to go for the "serrata" variety then.
Thanks for all the encouraging replies. Any more updates or info are most welcome!:)

What I mean in boswellia Serrata is the only one that has been studied as an anti-inflammatory or painkiller. There is no other medicinal strain to my knowledge not even for humans.

It is actually frankincense and the one from Somalia is the one true frankincense but its not called carteri... I thought it was called freana... Or Mehdi in Islamic as they use it ALOT but more as a perfume. I used to live in Malaysia and this is the one they burn at festivals.

Just be careful what you buy. As far as I know the serrata (the indian variety) is the only one that has any sort of evidence for pain relief.

The one people burn is the one from somalia, the freana.

There maybe other resins of the boswellia family but I have no idea what people do with that. Some say the smoke is quite psychotic... think witchdoctors!! They always seem to burn it in weird eastern rituals! Probably to conjure up strange spirits.... happy halloween!!! :D

I tried it on me for a couple of months, (osteo arthritis) but it made no difference. But it may be like other remedies which work for some but not others,
