Boswellia for footiness?

Hi,

I have a barefoot horse who is up and down with his health. he has a very sluggish immune and lymphatic system. he therefore lives as 'naturally' as possible. Anyway, at the moment he is going through an ouchy phase with his feet - i don't think the fact that spring was delayed and that all those super-strength grass blades are coming through helps!

Anyway, i've been reading up on Boswellia as an anti-inflamatory and that it is soothing on the gut (good hindgut-health being very important for hoof health of course) as well as brilliant for joint help and arthritis. I did get some - Pegasus NatureBute Solution in the hope this will help as a general pain relief. Bute & Devils Claw would be counterproductive on an already compromised gut!

So what i want to know is does anyone have any experience with barefoot horses who have used Boswellia and have seen an improvement in their feet? Or perhaps horses with chronic laminitis / LGL that have improved through using Boswellia?

I'm just being impatient really as i think it takes a week or so for me to see any improvements.

Just wanted to add that my boy has been on this for about 10 days now and i can see a noticable difference. I'd definitely recommend trying Boswellia for footy horses and not just for those with arthritis and joint issues.

I've not used it for footiness, but we use it for one with sidebone and spavin to keep him comfortable and it's been brilliant.

I've also given it to Ron during the hunting season to help settle his guts down as he tends to go quite runny on a hunting morning! it seems to have made a difference to him too.

I used it for several years (it doesn't have long term side effects like Bute) for my cushings pony and seemed to help her keep sound :)

A couple of weeks later and I have to say I am still impressed with the way my boy walks across the gravel drive to the barn. Used to be so careful, but just yesterday i walked him across it and he was looking everywhere else and didn't seem to notice nor care about the stones - i have NEVER seen him like this. I suspect his footiness may be down to inflammation of sorts, given Boswellia is an anti-inflammatory.

LornaA, I feel your pain - its so difficult getting something into a horse who doesn't like the taste - my friend's mare will eat just about anything - except the hormonal suppliment she tried to put her on. And she won't go near marmite which we were hoping would help her sweetitch, but my lad loves the stuff. Did you try the powder or liquid Boswellia? i used the liquid one which has ginger in it too - which may help? or perhaps if you put a teeeny bit in and slowly increase it so she doesn't notice? She's then get used to the taste and of course it would benefit her as you say. ... but then u have probably tried everything already

well although my horse is much more comfortable now ... it hasn't changed his attitude to work - lol. he probably reads my attitude to it !!

Can anyone tell me what colour it is please? As first order i had from natural horse supplies was dark green and had a strong smell, next one i ordered was pale yellow and had hardly any smell. Worried that the wrong order has been sent.

I've only ever bought NatureBute Solution - from Pegasus Health. (Through Amazon as I get the 10% subscription discount) it is a yellow-ish colour with a very strong smell. I didn't know there were other liquid versions of boswellia out there.

I'm still well impressed with this one tho. Horse's feet are growing well for the first time ever and still no sign of bloatiness despite being in a large field of plenty grazing now. Just wish he's put weight on tho !!

I am interested in this thread.
I currently use Global herbs Movefree Plus, which has ingredients listed as Garlic, Ginger, Frankinsence, Tumeric, Winter cherry, MSM.
Would NatureBute be a reasonable equivalent?
I like the GH and my horse eats it despite its strong smell but at £198 for a 5kg tub it is rather pricey and tbh I am not sure it is doing much, although she doesn't seem to have a clicky fetlock anymore!

NatureBute is pure Boswellia Serrata (frankinsence) and the liquid version has added ginger. I pay about £32 for a litre and give mine about 20ml a day... so it lasts about a month and a half.

I only tried this as i was looking for a natural painkiller that didn't affect the gut. just as an experiment to see if it would lessen my horse's footiness. He doesn't have arthritic problems (i think) As it happens, the anti-inflammatory benefits of NatureSolution has made all sorts of changes in him. he's had problems with lymphangitis in the past and his hindlegs would fill if he stood too long - especially the left hind that was always larger than the other despite how much he moved around. NatureBute has completely removed the swelling and his feet are growing really well now too - plus his gut is not bloating with change of grazing as it used to.

so YES - give it a try !! it has very good reviews for joint problems

If he has a sluggish immune system, I think i might be going down the route of testing for either EMS or Cushings, jsut to rule out....If he has just gone barefoot, i can understand the footiness, if not, check he hasn't got laminitis, one of the symptoms of EMS/Cushings..sluggishness is another and their immune system is compromised.

Hi, yep all of this crossed my mind, but he's had full blood count (all fine) and his foot specialist says he's def not a cushings case nor EMS.One of the biggest symptoms of EMS is weight. in mine's case - he struggles to put weight ON. I do believe there is an underlying imflamation issue of sorts - unfortunately I have yet to find a helpful vet and now as I am not vet insured ... i shall continue on the road using other means =)
