my dog has been steadily getting more lame (we thought he had arthritus and had been on painkillers) but today would not walk and was off his food.

took him to vets to get x rays. told that each cruciate ligaments in his hind legs have gone and that he needs a operation to fix them, but only when he looses about 3-4kg (he is slightly overweight due to him not going running as much

) in about a months time.

has anyone had any success with this operation? and anybody experienced this before?

My m-in-laws border had both done, but 2 years apart. She was right as rain afterwards but I seem to remember the recuperation was a pain for all concerned.
Best of luck.

someone I know had a jack russell have this happen about 4 months ago. He had an operation and then was confined to a crate and then a restricted area for a while but after 3 months he was running about fine again. He had just the one leg though, I mean his cruciate only went in one leg, not that he only had one leg

my dobermann bitch had them done a year ago. she had them done a week apart. the vet that did them is the one who wrote the procedure that the ohter vets now follow. he was absolutely brilliant.
My girl (in my siggy) is 100% perfect now. the hardest thing was keeping her at home for 3 months and then on the lead for a while. It was well worth it tho. She is perfect now. If i can answer any questions, or give you any reassurance, just let me know. hope you are insured tho'.

As suggested...the sucess rate is good...dependig on rest and after care, it very important the repaired site, does not sustain injury whilst healing...hence the introduction of a crate.
It's very important to maintain a steady weight for the breed in question, over weight dogs, do not make good candidates for these ops, and can cause no end of problems.

Large bouncy breeds suffer alot from this....very common in rotti's

A friend of mine has a GSP who has had to have TPLO surgery for both cruciate ligaments- one op last year, and the second one a couple of months ago - he made a full recovery from the first operation, the vet predicted that the other leg would need doing in about a year. He was crated and on very restricted exercise, she also took him for hydrotherapy sessions to improve his recovery rate, as I said, he made a full recovery from the first op and looks to do the same for the second - she found a lot of info on recovery programmes on the internet

My rottie has just had his second one done, had the first one done in July. The one that has already healed is perfectly sound. We are in the recovery period for the second one so will have to wait and see. He is a different dog now though and has discovered he can stand on his back legs and kiss mummy!!

BM Have just re read your post and am now nearly hysterical!! Am just imagining a JR with one leg and one that has had aTPLO (cruciate ligament) op on it to boot. Very funny although wouldn't be for the poor doggy.
