I am the loving, proud and caring owner of two TB ex-racers. A gelding aged 20 and a mare aged 8.

Bought mare in April directly from trainer. Stunning confo, very pretty, superb mover, won dressage after a week, hacked out on her own day after I bought her. Early June, having a lesson and she started head tossing and yellow mucus coming down one nostril. I took her to the vets, x-rayed, vet thought it was a tooth abscess and sent the x-ray off to the vet school to confirm. Vet school said that it wasn't an abscess, just sinusitis and to treat it will anti bs. After a month of anti bs there was no improvement and she got referred to vet school (3 hours drive away). They found what they thought was a sinus cyst and removed it and kept her in for a week. I brought her home and no improvement. Took her to my vet who referred her back to the vet school. She has now been in the vet school for just over two weeks and lo and behold, they have said that it is a tooth abscess. They had to remove it under general anaesthetic as they fractured the crown trying to remove it with extractors when she was sedated.
As a result, the secondary sinusitis is proving difficult to clear and there is now the possibility of bone infection - great - no indication of when or if she is coming home

Mare was bought to give the old boy some time off, however he has remained in work and competing. About 10 days ago he got a minor kick in the field. I thought nothing of it, cold hosed it and put some antiseptic cream on and today I got there and his leg was the size of an elephant. Yet he has been hacking out quite happily and is sound on it! I took him to the vet and he has been given anti bs and an anti-inflammatory jab. If it doesn't go down in 72 hours I have to take him back to have his tendon scanned, although vet said that he is 95% sure that it is infection. I hope so, as he already has tendon injury from racing and won't be able to deal with another one.

Just wanted to get it off my chest, as I seem to be having nothing but bad luck with them recently. Horsebox also broke down a couple of months ago, costing me £1500 in repairs.......I feel really depressed - even the dross on x-factor didn't cheer me up!

anyone fancy a bacon butty and red wine?

Ahh, poor hosses. Hope they are both feeling better soon:)

If it makes you feel any better 3 out of my 4 are lame (though one is ancient so i let him off!!) and the young TB got a "graze" on his leg last week that blew up so had to have antibiotics, stayed sound though (touched wood!):)

Oh thank you, that makes me feel better......surely I've had all three things now....nothing else can go wrong, can it?!?!? It starts to make me feel like I'm doing something wrong with them, but they are the most looked after horses you can think of...

Oh please do....can't wait to hear what you've decided to do....however be aware......TBs=vets fees!!! Make sure you have a credit card with a big limit!! x

Go and kick someones dustbin or what ever, sounds like you have a really good vet. I think your mare will be fine and the old boy,if your vet is correct again will be fine in a few days. and a couple of Bacon butties please but a mug of hot tea with them(drool)

Poor horses, no the feeling though! hope your horses recover fast.

Although I think I would be geting a new vet (vet school).

Thank you so much. Are you the one who doesn't drink??? I think I read someone's post recently about not liking alcohol. I don't like the taste, just the "relaxed" feeling it gives me because lets face it I can't afford to go out anymore! x

Yes, I have to admit, I didn't feel particularly impressed, but I'm a bit stuck now and I feel a bit better after vet school vet sent me a lovely reply the other day when I e-mailed her asking what she thought were honestly the chances of a full recovery. This vet is probably the top horse ENT vet in the country, so part of me thinks that they must know best. She said that she thinks that Blue still has a very good chance of a full recovery and that they have dealt with a lot of these complicated cases and they didn't want to remove the tooth until they were 100% sure. She said that the complicated ones have nearly all gone on to make a full recovery. It's just unfortunate I suppose that it wasn't found for so long. She is also doing her best to keep the costs down as well, so she knows where I am coming from. I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination. All my money goes into my horses. Blue was supposed to be my summer project, to sell on, however as the market is bad anyway and the horse is such a sweet mare, I think I will keep her....part of me is hoping that when the problem is sorted she will become my dressage superstar!

Sorry your having a bad day, sure your horses will be fine your vets sound ace.,typical TB like to cause stress and keep you penniless.
Will pass on bacon sandwich as sell them all day,can send you a sausage one,if you like and a good stiff drink to go with it. lol :)
