Bought a horse and was told so many lies- advice

Agree with this. Please could you PM me the dealers name. Definetely get onto Trading Standards, if she is selling horses on a regular basis then she is a dealer. Was in a similar situation last year but my husband is a solicitor so he came down hard on dealer. PM me if you need any advice. Sorry for your situation and hope you get is sorted out. By the way it is not just first time buyers who get caught, I have had horses all my life and got caught.

I'm really lost of with messaging people. I'm actually just going to post so people can see as people need to know. Is it ok to do this??

If you do that the thread will be pulled. If you click on the persons name who you want to message it will say 'send message', or similar, just use that. :-)

To PM - look at a post made by the person you want to PM. Their name is on the left of their post. If you click on their name a few options will come up in a little box - click on 'private message' and it will take you to a page where you can write the message to them.

Naming the dealer on a public forum is against the site terms and conditions.

Ah I better not do that then :-/ when I'm clicking a persons name it just takes me to a profile and doesn't have a option to send a message. I'm on my phone if that makes a difference?

Does it not say 'send private message' anywhere on the profile?

I'm using a laptop and it has it as an option when I look at profiles (on the left).

Yarm is very close to me and I'm pretty sure I know who this is and shes a con artist if its her. If either of the horses is a grey gelding can you let me know, as my friend permanently loaned her a horse and she sold it within 2 weeks, and my friend has been trying to track him down ever since. She doesnt want him back, she just wants to know hes ok!

Aw that's awful! Sorry we purchased mares. There was a grey - well they told us IDxTB that we viewed and she was stunning but when somebody got on we she went mental bucking and rearing so we obviously didn't get her, then I seen her advertised a week later saying she was perfect and was a Pure ID but I'm not sure what happened as after that the price was rapidly reduced for quick sale. :-/

Ok so I've figured it out, eventually! I had to use full site instead of mobile. I think I've PM'd everyone who asked me too. :)

Oh and with regards to a vetting - I was told I couldn't have her vetted as they had sent the passport away to be changed into my name and vets wouldn't do a vetting without a passport - I stupidly believed this.

Yeah, afraid that was very very silly! Alarm bells would have rung immediately for me and I would have walked away. Im afraid you have no come back if the horse is found to have ringbone or whatever, since they said sold "sound" but you have to prove the horse was knowingly lame at that exact time you tried it which clearly it wasn't. They could have buted it to make it sound but again, as you didnt have a vetting you can not prove this. You'll probably struggle with the issues regarding the passport as well since you should have taken that passport when you went to pick her up or at the very least seen it. Again, microchip would have been checked by the vet had you had her vetted.

Dont think you can speak to the sales livery person about this, since she is right - it wasn't her horse, and its not really up to her to know everything about it. Its up to you to approach the owner and ask questions I think.

I understand all of the above but...I suspect that 'sales livery' isn't what she actually does, this is a cover. She is always selling horses and the more people I'm speaking to the more people have had similar dealings with her and the stories keep coming..I've now been told and apparently someone has proof that they will provide if need be that there is a group of them in various parts of the north east with similar stories and they are all linked (pictures of them all on several horses they all advertise and in some groups I can see the place I was.) apparently they all come from a dealer in Ireland direct on sale or return and majority have been sent to them because of injuries ect and then they are sold on as 'hunters/eventers/show jumpers ect ect when not many are even capable.

..? . Is this anything to do with a regular poster on DD. she always claims horse is too small for son or some such story. Photos usually show a young man riding them.

Amber.. Sorry to hear this has happened to you and I hope you get some redress

Thank you. Me too. Sorry which is DD?

You have a contract of sale with the person who you purchased from
That person wether an agent or owner had the responsibility to give you the facts.
If you have the horse x-rayed, you could get the vets professional opinion as to how long the condition in his legs has been there, and if it was likely to be known.

If she sells as a sales livery, she is a dealer, as selling the horses for buisness. It is her responsibility to check the horses out, and know what is wrong with them.

If she was a private owner, there would be less chance of recorse for you., as they are not expected to know as much.

As a point of interest, it is up to the new purchaser to renew the passport. If you wanted the horse vetted, then I would say that you had not yet agreed to purchase that horse.
I would contact some passport issuers with the microchip nummber, and see if they have a horse registered to them with that microchip.

You want her to pay for the lies. What exactly do you want from her? Money? horse taken back? Discount? Truth? Or the person that she was selling on behalf of? the horses history? Then persue through small claims court.
If you can get more info about other dodgey sales your case would be stronger. plus vets reports (claim for them as well as they were a cost that she caused) etc etc etc

Thanks. I have contacted alot (I think nearly all) of the passport agencies to see if they had a record of her but none do. She was chipped in Ireland but was never registered to anyone in all of her 9 years.

I'm not sure what u want, maybe just for her to be stopped from doing what she is and for people to know about her so they don't end up in my situation.

Amber, how did you pay for the horse? Was it to the woman direct, through bank transfer or cheque? If a few people have done this, I'm wondering if trading standards could have her for dealing, as if it's a sales livery, the money would surely be paid to the owner and the owner billed for sales services separately.

I paid the seller in cash, as did my mother the previous week. To he totally honest I don't believe it is sales livery. I think that's a cover up so she can get out of these situations - some maybe but I think majority are not.

Been looking around more and discovered 5 preloved accounts upto now all from the same person in different names! But they are selling from another farm in yarm too!!

You clearly have bought from a dodgy dealer ,
You either keep the horse and have a go at her over the passport issues or you get a vets inspection ( the farrier saying something is not right with the horse just won't do ) to establish what issues the horse has and then return it is not as described and is unsuitable .
You will be properly sueing someone who can very easily show them selves as penniless so it possible this will be a lot of hassle for no gain.
Have you considered that this horse may have been illegally sold to you by that I mean that it's one of these sad sold on loan cases ?

Yes that has been a concern. The vet is coming out this week so I will know what's what then. I have decided to seek advice from a solicitor and take them to a small claims court as I have now found many others who have had similar dealings with the same people and we are all doing the same.

I would be talking to trading standards as to what to do re the passport, have you spoken to the agency who issued it?
In view of the other concerns, I would contact the missing on loan people, think they have a facebook account, just to double check the horse isn't stolen.
If she is selling multiple horses, a little chat to HMRC might be in order to make sure she has been paying tax on either the sales, or the sales livery!

Funnily enough I work for HMRC! I will do the relevant checks (regarding missing horses) and pass on the info at work also. The passport agency aren't very helpful to be honest and just say contact the police regarding her signing my signature and applying for a passport in my name, which I have done and was told to speak to a solicitor with regards to the next step.
