I wanted a tb x connemara couldn't find one so went to veiw a arab x welsh, got there didn't like the colour , she turned and gave me a dirty look and I thought "Oh i dont like that " didn't want to just walk away so the lady tacked her up for me and I got on went down the road a little bit thought I wouldnt go far as i didnt like the look of her went around the corner , she was so forward going and keen and i felt really safe turned her around took her back to the yard and said to the lady YES ill have her, that was eight years ago and she is the best thing since sliced bread love her to bits WE ARE UNTOUCHABLE WE ARE best mates, carried me all over the south of england on endurance rides and sponsored rides dont know what i will do without her , dont think i will ever be this lucky again , she aint no angel but she has taught me so much everyone thinks she is so pretty cant think why i didnt see it when i viewed her , didnt get her vetted , had her delivered two days after xmas knocked the woman down on price and got tack , cant be bad can it ?

Saw Dizzy twelve months before I bought her - didn't like her at all, thought she was a chestnut ginger mountain on legs. Went and bought Tiggy instead. When I lost Tiggy, it turned out that the ginger mountain had been backed and her owner was having to give her up due to health issues, so I went to see her - fell in love as soon as I saw her again

I did the same with my heavy gypsy cob. Would never have gone for one like him in the looks department, as I always prefer them finer, but he has been the best horse I have ever owned.
I had a bad injury and need a safe bet, but he turn out to be safe and forward going too and he jumps and does Dressage as well ( and gets placed!)
He is my Angel.

Yes, we travelled up from Portsmouth to Lincolnshire to look at a 16hh ID x Cob after seeing a picture of him on the internet. After a 4+ hr journey turned up at the farm and he was brought out of the field, muddy, with cut mane, cut feathers, and my heart sunk. Tried him out, still not over-excited but he seemed honest and calm. Whilst my heart was saying NO WAY but mouth was saying, YES, I'll have him and that was that. With a bit of maturing and TLC he is the most handsome, wonderful horse ever and I adore him. My instincts definitely kicked in and I got the horse of my dreams.
 
Went to look at three mares in foal that belonged to a friend. Said I would have one of the foals and would decide when they were foaled. Looked at the mares, two very nice sport horse types and a little TB.

Laughed and said well it wont be hers pointing at the TB. When they were foaled, the two sport horses threw HORRIBLE foals. One very badly put together chestnut, one ugly moody black colt and the most gorgeous little bay foal ever came from the TB mare.

Bought her on the spot and those 6 months till weaning were the longest ever.

10 years on, never looked back

As above about 17/18 yrs ago I did just that. He is my horse of a lifetime and because of that I am now struggling to gel with his replacment as my riding horse!
 
Yep.. I didnt want a mare. Didnt want a bay.. really wanted a TB but wasnt allowed..

Basically I wanted a 16hh chestnut TB gelding..
I have a 16.3hh bay German WB mare..

Not much diffrence i suppose
 
Yep. When I first saw my little baby horse she was still really gangly, stood with her legs turned at very funny angles (so she looked pigeon toed) and the most obvious thing about her was her very pink nose. She was tied up next to a strapping big warmblood and he made her look like a poor relation. I tried 5 horses but the choice came down to between these two. The big warmblood was lovely, but too much horse for the job I wanted a horse for and his movement made my back hurt. The little mare was comfier, so easy to ride and once she stood up straight all her legs did point in the right direction.

Good decision, I've had her about a year and she's fantastic. She's filled out to about twice as wide, and her feet no longer look far too big for her body. I've even got used to the pink nose and I think she's really pretty now. I still feel a bit guilty for falling in love with the wrong horse at first.

Me too. First horse ticked most of the boxes for what I didn't want looks-wise, but I loved riding him and we've had 12 fun years doing a bit of everything. Next horse was just what I wanted looks-wise but has had a million vet problems and I've come to realise that looks aren't everything! Have just bought another which again is complete opposite to what I thought I wanted - I never wanted a mare, and certainly not chestnut mare! - but she is lovely to ride and handle, and hasn't put a foot wrong yet.
 
4 years ago I went to see a 15.2 black section D. Looks-wise he was perfect but I didn't like him. When I explained why (no oomph), they said "we've got one that would suit you" and brought this grey monster with a huge clunky head and (at the time) a huge graze right down the middle of his face. I thought "ych-y-fi" (good Welsh expression for yuck!) but I rode him just to be polite and a week later had a 16.2 IDxHippo (as I later found out!). My only regret is that he's grey (well until he reaches the mud!)
 
We were looking for a loan horse some years ago. My son was adamant he didn't want a grey and definitely didn't want a mare.
What did we get?
You've guessed it. A grey Mare. And she was wonderful. One of the best horses we ever had. Pic in my siggy.
Mind you she was an absolute mud bucket. The most difficult horse to keep clean I have ever had but we forgave her that as she was so wonderful in every other way.
 
I wasn't really sure what I wanted when I bought my old horse, but other than feelings of pitty he was not a looker when I went to see him. I bought him there and then as he looked like he would drop dead. When we got him back to the yard a friend came and asked me why there was a shire yearling in the stable - I had to reply he was my new 4yo! It took a while weight wise, but he was the best! I sold him when I went to Uni and have been searching for another since.
 
Yes - categorically didn't want a grey, would have preferred a gelding, thought she was a lot of money for how green and unfit she was.
But my OH, who really needed a confidence boost after struggling with our previous mare got on really well with her.
We reserved judgement and tried some other horses and she was nearly sold to someone else. Then she kept turning up everywhere we went - at a show miles from home with her vendor, at a clinic that we took our other horse to, and it became more obvious that she was the right horse.
Once we had made the decision, OH rode her in a busy collecting ring to try different saddles and despite the saddler being a bit of a character who none of the horses seem very keen on

she was great.
Depite her having a serious illness in the first year we owned her and being tricky to handle on the busy yard where we initially kept her I haven't regretted it for a moment...
