Hi everyone! I’ve had horses my whole life and my family have just bought our very own stables.
I’ve currently got a section D mare as seen in the picture. But have just bought a beautiful little AppaloosaXshire filly around 5 month ☺️ She is my first foal. Any advise is much appreciated. X

Wonderful news! When I got my first foal a few years ago, he's rising 2 now, I got lots of advice on here.

I know lots of people will recommend keeping youngstock with other youngstock, I haven't done this and he's kept at home with our small mixed herd and it turning into a lovely chap so far. I did this based on personal experience of knowing lots of people who have raised youngstock this way. However, I'd also love a field full of youngstock playing around if I could lol.

I've also been really careful regarding what he's fed to reduce the risk of him growing too quickly, so he's been on a good quality balancer, good grass/hay and a little linseed in winter. He's looking fab currently.

That mix of breeds would be very interesting to see grown up!

You’ll get many replies about how you’ll need company for the foal (your one mare may not cut it as you’ll be taking her away for riding etc and foal will be left alone) and how to get the balance between over-handling and creating a civil animal. Focus on leading nicely a couple times a week and picking up feet/touching legs. Bar that don’t do too much it’s not necessary.

Someone I know got a rescue foal to keep for a year or two while their foal grew up. The rescue then went on to a foster family when original foal was old enough to start getting started.

I came to read this thinking OMG a very early foal! To avoid confusion please be aware that although only 5 months old your foal is not a foal it is a yearling!!
