I don't mean to be too pedantic here but I can't help noticing that a lot of people on this forum use the work 'brought' when they mean 'bought'. Eg. I 'brought' a pony for £2000.
Am I missing something here, is it a new way of talking or is it simply a typo? I haven't noticed it on any other forums I've been on.
I really don't want to offend anyone I'm just curious.

I hadn't come across it until I read this forum either. It's not a 'new' way of doing something nor is it a typo, just basic stupidity :)

By the way:
use the work 'brought'
Probably best to proof read your own posts :p

Just an age old grammatical error, unfortunately. Same problem as the apostrophe. Haven't you noticed the spoken error on TV, too? Like the fact you've noticed it as you are a "schoolmaster" poster at the moment!

Brought = I brought the shopping home in the car. As in past tense of to bring.

Bought = I bought a horse from them last year. As in past tense of to buy.

Not going to make judgement on whether it is a spelling error, grammatical, regional use or anything else. I don't care that much, I still understand the gist of a sentence.

Yes I should have read my post before I submitted it but 'work' was a typo!

Exactly the way I understand it. I hate bad spelling and grammar in sentences - and I'm a science teacher, not an English teacher!

If we are going to be pedantic - and why not:D then can I bring up the problem of Advise and Advice.

People often post asking for advise which drives me mad!

So please can we have

Advice - Can you offer advice on..... My advice would be to....

Advise - please can you advise me on... I would advise you to....

Sorry but it really does annoy me. Though I am sure my spelling is sometimes annoying to other people:p

Speaking as an ex-proof reader, might I suggest that grammar is something that hasn't actively been taught in schools for at least, say, 10 years now...

Easy solution for you all, move to Walsall and become a Yamyam.
yam= I am = yam happy
yam = you are = yam ok?
yam= you are= yam winger?
yam = you're= yam dinners ready

I can go on, forget grammer yam wasting yam time!

(actually 'enjoy' gammer just not spelling)(the 'yam' sounds differant for you, more 'yow')

Pet hate ending sentences with a preporsition, advertisements do it all the time.

You've not met my 11 year old then! Pedantic about spelling and grammar as her grandfather, she delights in criticising her friends emails and replies to the meaning of their incorrectly written post rather than intended meaning, causing confusion!

I love this and may have to steal it!

So pleased that someone else brung (sic) it up as it's been annoying me for ages. Bad grammar is something that seriously annoys me! Or should I say annoys me seriously!!!!

Bought & brought have already been mentioned, as have your and you're; however, confOrmation (with regard to how a horse is put together) it is NOT confIrmation (as in to confirm something). It is a manege not a menage (means household or domestic duties).

The 'yam' stuff is funny - thank you!

And yes, it is clear that you 'enjoy' grammar more than spelling, as you haven't learnt to spell 'grammar' - or 'preposition', for that matter, or 'different'. And your punctuation and grammar actually leave rather a lot to be desired.

Sorry to be pedantic, but if you're going to talk about your 'pet hates' regarding bad grammar and laugh at other people's poor use of English, it would help if you could take the trouble to spell and punctuate properly - and use halfway decent grammar yourself!

This is priceless! Where did you find it? (If you wrote it yourself, you're very talented!)
