Bought unseen problems returning

One of my mares will still pin her ears and give you the evil eye after 10 years! She's very protective of her stable and defensive around people she doesn't know.

But my non horsey OH can now look after her solo by just being nice, giving her a treat and telling her not to be a drama queen.

Ozzy has been with you 5 minutes and just needs a chance to settle.

It might sound like an impulsive thing to say but we had planned to look for another cob within the next year or so as our 26 year old may be ready for retirement (although he's still fine at the moment!) Out two boys live out but we are in the process of building a stable to be completed before winter.
It's just that I can't stand the thought of Ozzie going back to the dealer.

Gently OP, I suggest that you might not be in the best frame of mind or in the right place mentally for any horse right now.
Bringing a new horse home, no matter how much of a saint it has been in a previous home, can cause problems to arise.
It’s not always as simple as getting a new horse home and being able to hack out within the first week with zero issues. They often need time to settle and can have some backwards steps with regards behaviour both on the ground and under saddle. Lots of us on here have bought horses who we were told were one thing, but that we have ended up having to put a lot of extra work into once we got them home. It kind of comes with the territory when buying horses.

Whatever you choose to do with this lovely chap, I would think carefully about whether you are in the right place at the moment for any horse. They tend to throw curveballs at us when we least expect it and you need to be able to mentally cope with that.

Last contribution from me before I bow out as well because frankly this thread is depressing me.
Op, life is not a pony book. You don't see a photo of a horse and know they're the one and have a perfect equine companion from day dot.
When I went to view my mare she slopped along on a washing line line and let us handle her all over, pick feet up look in her mouth feel over every inch of her, got her home and not only did she rear on the lorry and cut her head she was then pretty much uncatchable and when caught endlessly broke lead ropes and tie rings and barged me about and was a totally different creature to the literal dope on a rope I'd viewed.

I cried a lot, I regretted it and yep, resented her for not being my perfect birthday horse.
It took a lot of time together at first just grooming her neck and her mane (cos I was too scared to go any further back!) then progressing to leading her around in walk, standing, backing up, getting used to each other. Probably sounds boring as hell but shes got great ground manners now, shes the most accident prone animal I've ever met but we always get compliments on how well she behaves for the vet 😂😂 I've got a best friend in that horse I used to hate.
Coming out of hospital when I've been in for mh always involves a pony detour. I can literally lie next to her lose when I used to not be able to groom past her second rib, I was that terrified. (Probably without any cause but I was an imaginative 16yo so....)

I've always regretted not getting her vetted but she was (considerably) less than £5k so financially it seemed a bit silly to double the horses price on a vetting. But life is not a pony book and horses are not robots. If you want to sell, sell, or give him a chance but at least understand Ozzy is as much the loser in this situation, if not more so, than you.

If you post the advert if you decide to sell I'm sure someone here would jump at the chance to own such a horse, he could really be something special with a bit of time to decompress. But I really would evaluate if horse ownership is for you, it can be phenomenal for your mental health but undoubtedly it's really really hard at times too.

I feel really sorry for the poor bloody confused horse.

If I hadn't just found out I'm pregnant I'd have him in a heartbeat.

Same. I'm not far away, and very tempted to hitch up the trailer, go and get him and hand her the money I've set aside for new windows.

I've genuinely found this whole thread really upsetting.

I don’t believe for one second your YO won’t allow outside help for you and your pony and if that’s true, I’d be out of there pretty sharpish!

If you don’t mind me asking, how much are you paying for your full livery and how much turnout is he having?
Actually I can believe it but it would raise many red flags about the current yard and their desire to control.

Agreed.

But it looks like there's a few of us who would be happy to give this lad a home so there's potential for things to improve....

Well, who knows. If you and OP can talk, you may be getting a new pony xx

I can remember those first few weeks, it was bloody awful. I just couldn't get my head round the fact that people get away with selling just anything. The guy that did me sold a horse with a broken pelvis and it nearly killed someone.
The problem is we all know that these people exist. We know because we've either been there or read about it . These people can tailor their patter to the person in front of them. They know exactly how far to push it. It's easy money and any one without any morals could do it
For my part I went to a dodgy dealer and he could of sold me a three legged horse and convinced me the fourth leg was on its way
Maybe that's just the initial thing that the op has to go through.
Once that's over wouldn't it be amazing to see a picture of Ozzy living his best life!

For those that have offered help and sympathy I thank you. I was in a good place before all this, well as good as a depressive person with a negative outlook on life can be. For those that have been judgmental and have a disapproving tone I hope you never feel so low you don't want to carry on. I am now at the end and can't take anymore. Ozzy will be looked after I can assure you of that. Goodbye.

Or Another Pony for Jean - Jean is given a pony which naps like anything and bucks her off into her father's cucumber frame
In Jill has Two Ponies, Jill buys Rapide even though she's not impressed. When she gets him home, he puts his ears back and turns his head away and won't take a treat. She thinks he despises her. Mrs Darcy at the riding school spots he's been mistreated and one of the girls rides him and he is a different horse. Jill realises she hasn't given him a chance, apologises, makes an effort and he turns into her other heart horse.

Jasmine, it’s obvious you don’t like or want Ozzy, for your own mental health and for the wellbeing of Ozzy who really has done nothing wrong apart from being a horse! please take up one of the other posters offer to buy him from you and then you can move on from all of this

If you seriously want to rehome Ozzy please take up the offers of people interested in buying him.

If that is the impression you have got then you haven't read the thread properly.

Sending my best wishes to Ozzy xx

Looking at the latest post from OP, it's not going to happen.
We've done everything we can, offering support and solutions.

I think the only thing we've all been negative about is the idea of taking on the dealer/returning the horse/getting money back.

Just hope that everything works out OK.

Such a shame for Ozzy, he did not ask for any of this and honestly I can not see that the dealer has done much wrong. It seems he really is a steady cob. So he is a bit grumpy in the stable but that can be dealt with. Poor Ozzy.
