Had a jumping lesson with Blue last night

My instructor decided that to get himself using his back end and bum more we would do bounce grids rather than a normal 1 stride double or anything!

We ended up with 4 small upright bounces in a row with a placing pole before the first!

Which was scary to me as i've never really done bounces before!

Found it a bit confusing at first as usually between the fences in a 1 stride double i sit back (just in case he might stop i've been jumping without the horse too many times before

) so i was trying to sit back a bit inbetween the bounces which of course was impossible!

Finished off with 2 bounce fences, 1 stride to an upright spread with the back pole at 3ft ish

which wasn't bad considering we haven't jumped for a probably a good few months!

I do loads of gridwork with my beastie, and I love bounces. They are brilliant to incorporate into grids and they really do get the horse thinking quickly on his feet. If you have done a lot of grid work you can try putting a bounce or two on the end of the grid, but this should only be used for more experienced combinations. Glad you enjoyed your lesson, try not to worry about bounces, I love grid work so much and get so much from it as I have a very spooky horse and know when he's over the first part of the grid he is unlikely to stop over the rest.

Bounces are fun, they're really hard to sit to (or so I find anyway) but I'm so all over the place I can't help but laugh at myself!

I wanna start doing some grids with mine but she's very very inexperienced so think it'll be a while before we start doing any bounces, damn

I no what you mean. I had a grid lesson last year on my cob. They were all set up as bounces and he would NOT bounce. He insisted on putting a stride and was corkscrewing himself from side to side to fit the stride in. I was mortified as there were 2 other v experienced riders in the lesson. He can do them now tho, something just clicked one day. Great fun!!

Haha! Bounces are great! Madam got introduced to them last week, with a line of 3... she was hesitant over the first one, and LEAPT the last one as she was jumping "out" and then proceeded to do exactly the same everytime we went through the grid

accompanied by her own "bouncing" afterwards

Horses are SO much fun

MY RI made me do 8! I thought I was going to die! Apparently it was no problem for the horse who just took it all in her stride...so to speak!
