What is the stance on bow hunting in the UK?

Over here crossbows are legal - I don't remember whether they are in the UK or not, I think not. Anyway how about bow hunting? Is that legal over there? I have a boarder here who is a horsebow hunter and he has trained one of my horses to have the bow shot whilst being ridden. Pretty cool but not sure whether it is ethical? Opinions?

TBH, modern bows are not too dissimilar to your average gun these days, and as with guns, shooting rabbits and birds I do not have a problem with.

However, I'm not too sure a bow versus a deer or another large mammal (especially considering the size of some of your native canadian beasts!) is okay with me.

But it's the same with guns.

Unless you are an experienced stalker, can garuntee that you'd hit in the heart or the head and can get close enough to ensure this, it's just wrong anyways.

And then, tbh, a bow wouldn't spook just about every other living creature in range like a gun would.

Freud would have a field-day. Tell your boarder from me he's a knob.

Oh he's certainly no knob. He believes very strongly in picking his wits against that of very intuitive and sensitive animals. Bow hunters have to be very skilfull otherwise there is no kill. He sees it as the fairest fight there can be, particularly when he is up against bears.

I am of a similar mind to Dorey - I'm not too sure how ethical it is where large animals are concerned; but then I haven't seen it done so am fairly ignorant of how exactly the kill takes place.

From what I have been told, the range of a bow is nowhere near the range on a high powered rifle and he has no sight on his bow....it has to be 100% pure accuracy at a far closer range or there is no kill.

What sort of person goes around on a horse armed with a crossbow like some f***ing centaur? More to point, what sort of person gets a kick from firing a bolt into a bear? I genuinely can't understand how anyone could get pleasure from this. Sometimes I'm so ashamed of the human race.

''Sometimes I'm so ashamed of the human race.''

My heart beats purple piss.

How about getting upset about some of the world affairs that have significance.

Go shoot a bolt into a deer then. I hope it makes you very happy. While you're at it organise a dog fight and bait a badger and staple a spaniel's ears to a tree for a laugh. Nothing really matters.

Thankyou, but none of the mentioned activities tickle my fancy. However, if they did, I would do them with or without your blessing. You really don't matter.

What, in your opinion, is the best method of culling bears, deer and moose?

Culling is a Government initiative therefore it WILL happen regardless of anyone's emotional stance. There are a lot of rules and regulations - no tosspot from the street can just go out and participate in it.

Tia, as I said, modern bows are little different to guns!

They can come with sights, I do believe, and can fire with masses of power behind them.

I'm no expert, but a family friend is a deer stalker. You know, getting up close, quiet as a mouse, shooting one in the head/heart, causing as little suffering as poss, and bearly disturbing the rest of the herd...

That is not cruel.

Unfortunatly, dogs are sometimes required... they can help with tracking, and no expert is going to be accurate 110% of the time, he will need a dog or two to help find a wounded deer.

In their desperation to hit the toffs in the groin, antis forget this.

Guns and bows are only ethical when combined with tracking dogs or hounds, end of.

Yes they can come with all sorts of gadgets these days however he makes his own carbon bows - he is a Bowyer. He makes them to the design of his ancestors from the Steppes. His bows don't have any sights - they are quite impressive.

His shots, apparently, are only taken from close range and he tells me that it can easily take him 12 hours to get the deer - he will not fire if he does not have a clear and precise shot.

That's what he tells me anyway - can you guess what he was doing with his bow this afternoon up in my back woods? As a little favour to me...... *smiles*

You obviously read nothing of what I wrote. He does not agree with guns and shooting from far distances - too much risk of missing or injuring rather than a nice clean shot - hence he shoots at close range with his bow.

Sounds like his boarder has quite a good life to me.

Stalking a deer for 12 hours to get up close enough for a good clean kill with a bow and arrow you have made yourself sounds excellent fun and very worthwhile.

Better than blowing it's brains out with a lump of lead any day.

Still not sorted unfortunately - he was there but didn't show himself. The boarder rides Sureshot every day though and he has started always taking his bow with him ....... just a matter of time now. Jeez how long have I been saying that!
