My mare has to have a week's box rest after a strain to a ligament in her stifle (we hope that is all it is!). She is normally fed between 2 feeds - 2 scoops of baileys horse and pony cubes and a scoop of alfalfa blend and adlib haylage. I would be grateful for advice on what people think I should cut this down to whilst she is on box rest?

She is not too bad on box rest and doesn't really get stressy but she will get a bit excitable and I need to walk her out in hand for 5 mins twice a day and don't want her doing anything daft! She is normally ridden 4/5 times a week schooling and show jumping. Thanks

I'd cut out the cubes altogether as she only needs enough energy for the basics, ie keeping healthy. Ad-lib haylage should provide her with this, but keep the chaff if you're feeding supplements and/or as a token feed if others are being fed at the same time as her.

You don't want to cut right back, as she needs nutrients for ligament to heal, but a basic vit/min supplement is fine - her chaff might even be supplemented already.

as above, no nuts or hard feed, just chaff (hi-fi or similar, not alfalfa really as it's an energy food) and vit/min supplement. hay or haylage would be enough tbh as she won't be doing any work. if she's not clipped i'd consider just putting a lighter rug on her (or no rug) so she uses some energy keeping warm... one of my youngsters is on box rest at the moment and i've taken her rug off (i have draught free stables though.)

If it's only a week I would feed her the same but reduce the quantity by at least half

Thanks all. I have cut all the cubes out now and am just feeding her chaff. Kerilli - thanks for the note re alfalfa as I hadn't really considered it an energy food. Lets hope she stays sane!
