my horse has always stabled ok, he didnt like being stabled for days at a time he would just become a handful like when they are all kept in because of the snow he would throw himself around when leading etc.

3 years back he had a massive injury to his foot which meant that he was on 6 months strict box rest then a further 2 months of box rest but walking short distances in hand as he had a walking cast on.

when he was finally let out he wasnt supposed to go out he was supposed to do 10 months box rest but he became dangerous to be around, he was on 24 ACP a day and he had to have a V bar on his door to stop him climbing it, nothing would keep him occupied for more then 10 mins then he would turn back into daemon horse, you had to avoid walking too close to his stable as he would try and grab you and pull you over the door you couldnt enter the stable with him as he would pin you against the wall and try and kick you to death.

this wasnt the horse i knew.

when he was finally let out he went out 12 hours a day and slowly making it longer until mid summer when he was out 24/7 he was almost back to normal, he has never quite settled though

he moved to a yard where he was stabled 18hours a day (not my choice i didnt want him there) it took him 5 months to settle there but he was still incredibly gumpy over the door, only i could approach him or go in the stable with him but still some days he would defiantly have a bee in his bonnet and he would try and double barrel me.

we have now moved to a yard where he is out 24/7 in the summer but if i put him in the stable he tries to climb the door, he stresses, he kicks the wall and if you enter the stable with him its like he is completely unaware you are there, this happens whether or not there are other horses in...

has anyone else had a horse that has decided he will no longer be stabled after a long period of box rest or is it just me?

Yes, you have a horse which is exactly like mine. I bought her in April last year and she was a dream - excellent nature, calm, quiet - just perfect. She got ill about 7 weeks after I bought her and ended up in hospital for over two months at one time and then she went back in for another three weeks and came home for another period of 3 months box rest. Her personality has changed completely. As soon as I bring her in, she starts weaving and kicking the door. It's as if she's scared that she's never going to be let out again. Very distressing to see. I keep her out as much as possible, but sometimes she has to come in if there is nothing out to keep her company in the field. I'm hoping she will improve in time. Good luck.

its good to hear that my horse isnt the only one not saying its good for them to be like this

i just want him to be happy, but he stresses in the field on his own so he cant stay out (and we aren't allowed grass livery but he just wont settle, but then it also makes me wonder is it the stable he is in? but all the other stables are too small as hes 17.2hh we are having his door made higher so he cant climb out but can see out but i feel so horrible but i was thinking maybe if i leave his door open and have a little coral outside if he would calm down its worth a try :o
