I currently have my son's pony on box rest after an annular lig op we are on week 3 with a possible 6 more weeks to go.

If anyone has any ideas to stop him climbing the walls!! he is on strict diet to keep his weight down and the portable radio is working overtime.

my boy is entering his 3rd week of box rest, all i do is put the radio on allday for him he likes classical fm,that seems to relax him and he just munches his hay

PLASTIC ROAD CONES TIED UP WITH ROPE IN THE STABLE, FOOTBALLS, MIRRORS, SWEDES ON STRING, HAYNETS IN VARIOUS PLACES AROUND THE BOX, THOSE PLASTIC BALLS YOU PUT NUTS IN HAVE TRIED ALL THESE OVER THE YEARS, THEY ALL WORK FOR A SHORT WHILE. GOOD LUCK

I would put swedes and turnips in on ropes and hang for hom to eat.... bob apples in his water-trough, cover a largefootball in honey and hang in a hay net- he'll be sticky but will enjoy licking it. I cant think if any more at the moment

If you are allowed to move him a little, maybe he could go in a stable with a different view. Picking grass for him (or giving him a turf) might be appreciated, as might giving him different types of hay/haylage at different times of the day.
Apples in the water bucket may amuse him too.
Hope he makes a good recovery.

Oh no you will get addicted to this forum!

On week 7 of (hopefully) 8 weeks box rest. Have done most of the suggestions above and all very good! Radio he seems to like, and treat balls work well, if your horse can move around, change the treats from pony nuts to bits of carrot and apple for added interest! Also got a stable lick, large thing in a tub, only for daytime but keeps him amused! Lickits last about 5 minutes!!

Best thing though as far as I can see is that my horse has kicked out part of the back of his stable, now he can see what's going on in the manage and the fields!!! DOH!!!

Best of luck hope pony is well soon! XXX

I moved stables twice a day the change of scenery really helped .Everthing else has been covered hope he gets better soon.
Are you allowed to graze him inhand I stood out in the pouring rain and freezing cold twice a day for 30mins it helped him .Didnt do me much good

thanks for all suggestions, unfortunatly he is not allowed out of his stable at all so walking in hand and moving stables is out of question but will certainly try some of the other ideas.

Just a bit cautious with carrots, treat balls etc as trying to keep weight off him as he is the type who gets fat on fresh air!!

I think these ideas have already been suggested but I'll mention them anyway........... a stable mirror, one of those ball things that you can put pony nuts in, whole carrots in his haynet, pieces of apple in his water, string through a swede and tied up, a lick but not likit cos they are all sugar and lots of TLC which I'm sure he's getting anyway, it always helps if there's another pony/horse in

If he's not settling to being in you could also try a Reiki session for him if you know a good Reiki Practicioner locally.
