Hi - I am moving yards, to a 10x12ft box for 15.3hh IrishxTB sports horse.
He loves to lie down. Do you think it will be big enough for him to manage that?

Just about. :-)

But I'm pretty anti horses-in-small-spaces-for-long-periods... so I'd be making sure there is good all year round turn out (get them to confirm for how long each day) before moving.

Plenty of space, not perfect, but not dreadful either.

My stalls are 10 x 11. This mare is 15.2h, taken from a very weird angle, but you get the idea.

I have much taller and bigger horses in them without any problem at all.

Seems a bit small to me. I'd be seriously worried about him getting cast in it. Have they not got any bigger ones, 12x12 is about minimum size I would use for a horse that big? I agree with tickles that he will need plently of turn out to expand and go phew! Mine are all spoilt with 15x15 boxes :) :)

:)Ha! Don't stable a horse in Canada then!
I prefer bigger stalls too, but beggars can't always be choosers, my bigger ones usually have pairs in.

I think your horse will be fine as long as it is going to get turned out each day. I have a 16.1hh and a 15.3hh and they are in 10x14 boxes - sort of long and thin. They are fine and the mare spends most of her day rolling and lying down - she doesn't have any problems at all.

My stables are 10' x10' and my 15.3hh TB has no problem lying down in them. Before my TB, I had a 16hh cob and a 16hh TB, both had no problems lying down. The people that had my stables before me all had horses who were in the 16hh- 16.1hh mark and had no trouble either.

Standard Stable size is 12 x 12 which is what mine are.

My 17.2hh IDxTB lies down flat out and does so comfortably. He is also getting on a bit and finds this size fine to get up in.

I would not be worrying your horse will lie down flat out and not touch the sides.
