box walking

those that have horses that box walk what bedding do you use? as my stable is disgusing all the time, i'm thinking of just had mats put down and putting up with a smelly horse. so far i have tried straw, shavings, happy jack and sawdust. he was on sawdust last year and was really clean but now he is just walking it into a total mess. also why do they box walk, as he didn't do it last year and nothing has changed.

my box doesnt just walk he nearly canters so he just has rubber and a corner big enough to lay on tryed eveything and this worked best

Mine box walks due to being stressed about being in and seeing other horses walking around on the yard or going out is when he does it loads. He likes being out with his mates, and dred having to have him on box rest. I use shavings but semi deep litter so there is a fairly solid base, but he mixes all poo's in. I just put up with sifting through with a good shavings fork, and try and keep him out as much as possible.

I use shavings but am thinking of changing to bliss as it must look and smell nicer.
