I'm starting to do a bit of research into the breed/health problems etc but can anyone fill me in (in small sentences and words please ;) :p). I'm not looking for the near future but there's no harm in being prepared :D

My friends boxer has several brain cells missing, two warts on her head (her horns) and sleeps with her tongue our. But such a character and lovable dog. She does have a face only a mother vs- love. Health - has sensitive skin but she is white and suffers with dirty ears which are cleaned out v reg. But I have never met a nasty boxer. Such clowns.

Absolutely barmy!!!

OH's cousin had three, one recently died of a tumour. Of the remaining two one will not tolerate male dogs at all, to the point he now has to be muzzled in public, after several incidents involving trips to the vets for other dogs :(
Amazing with people though, and the female one is EVERYONE's bestie!!

Goons - one and all:D

My dad has always had boxers and while not being particularly unhealthy dogs, all have had skin problems at some point. They are very prone to tumours, heart problems and as you would expect in dogs of that size they can have hip issues.

A couple of his dogs have been aggressive but I blame an awful lot of that on his handling, he is as soft as butter with them and doesn't nip any problems in the bud. In saying that, all have been fantastic with kids.

Training seems to be a very loooooong drawn out process but then again who's fault is that?;) I love my dad but he thinks I'm far too strict with my dogs and in the past we have fallen out when I have reprimanded his dogs ( not severely, just roared at and put outside one of his when she went to snap at my OH for no reason) so I tend to blame him rather than the dogs for any trangression...

Do you want the short list or the long list?

In short..Heart problems(serious heart problems :( ).Respiratory problems due to the short brachycephalic jaw and unfortunately a breed that are known for being cancer magnets.

Also some issues with allergies, eye problems(corneal dystrophy),hip dysplasia,Bloat.Issues with demodectic mange in some lines but not usually seen if breed responsibly.

Although they are in general lovely energetic friendly dogs I am not personally a fan.

Ive just finished a placement in a referral hospital and we had a lot of boxers in with various issues. All but one had to be muzzled to be handled. That may have been just bad luck with temperament and the poor creatures being ill but it raised a red flag for me.

They also snore to a whole new decible!

They are a breed that I would advise serious research into the breeder if your looking for a pup as breeding dogs need a lot of genetic health tests done.Even then Id still recommend insurance.
Sorry if its not what you were hoping to hear :(

Boxers- the eternal puppy.

skin issues, prone to fungal infections, reproductive issues, prone to cancer, joint issues, heart issues, respiratory issues.

the breed is full of landmines, but all the boxers ive known only one has been a complete darling. the others have had some type of ''quirk' which i dont doubt is down to the management of their ''puppy''ness.

Not at all. I was aware of some of the problems so a lot aren't a surprise. I do think the quirks are predominantly owner related same with most dogs.

I'm obsessive about breeder research (did a stupid amount when getting Quila so making sure I know the breeder/lines is something I'll be looking at nearer the time.

i agree that often the quirks are because of the owners reactions to such a silly breed. im sure they could be alot of fun.

Rugby player Josh lewsey has a pair he takes out shooting and im pretty sure one of those picks up, so there is definitely potential. :)

My uncle's mother bred them, so I grew up surrounded by the things. Amazing dogs. The three I knew lived to the age of thirteen and had few health issues, but this was nearly thirty years ago.

My friend's female Boxer is seven, and has a mild heart murmur, but not so it affects her quality of life in any way. A breed dear to my heart, and one of the reasons I chose a Boston terrier (same clownish personality, same darling nature, but fewer health problems and a longer lifespan).

I have known a few. My agillity trainer had 2 (and did agility with one!) but sadly had to have one put down with a brain tumour a few weeks back, she was only 7 :( and the other one has to have immunotherapy periodically for a skin condition.

However some friends of my parents have had them for years and only had health problems with one of them but I'm darned if I can remember what it was, sorry! They are definitely playful, puppyish dogs but a bit lazy too and the ones I have known have had lovely temperaments. Oh, and don't forget the slobbering lol!
