I'm starting to do a bit of research into the breed/health problems etc but can anyone fill me in (in small sentences and words please
). I'm not looking for the near future but there's no harm in being prepared
Boxers- the eternal puppy.
skin issues, prone to fungal infections, reproductive issues, prone to cancer, joint issues, heart issues, respiratory issues.
the breed is full of landmines, but all the boxers ive known only one has been a complete darling. the others have had some type of ''quirk' which i dont doubt is down to the management of their ''puppy''ness.
Do you want the short list or the long list?
In short..Heart problems(serious heart problems).Respiratory problems due to the short brachycephalic jaw and unfortunately a breed that are known for being cancer magnets.
Also some issues with allergies, eye problems(corneal dystrophy),hip dysplasia,Bloat.Issues with demodectic mange in some lines but not usually seen if breed responsibly.
Although they are in general lovely energetic friendly dogs I am not personally a fan.
Ive just finished a placement in a referral hospital and we had a lot of boxers in with various issues. All but one had to be muzzled to be handled. That may have been just bad luck with temperament and the poor creatures being ill but it raised a red flag for me.
They also snore to a whole new decible!
They are a breed that I would advise serious research into the breeder if your looking for a pup as breeding dogs need a lot of genetic health tests done.Even then Id still recommend insurance.
Sorry if its not what you were hoping to hear![]()
