Boxing day madness

oh and the amount of times all the other horses im with mess about rearing and bunny hopping ect he stands perfrctly and waits same after a gallop even on a feild we gallop in! if you have a SANE horse there no prob with it if ur SAFE and take precautions

im not text speaking im on my phone and i didnt look what i wrote although noticed there one in there but rest isnt... anyways im out on the subject as i think if ur safe ur horse is safe ur fine because everyone has to start somewhere and this maybe the only time the OP can go out ie no transport and hunt is local.... lke mine i have no transport and the hunt im doing is hackable.
 
If the horse is normally well behaved and the huntmaster knows it is a hunting newbie then it should be ok but use your own common sense as to whether you will be safe or not.
Personally i wouldn't take any horse out hunting this winter. It is far too boggy and far too risky and likely to pull a tendon and do serious damage to legs.
As for people understanding ribbons i haven't found that people in the hunting field take any notice of them. I took my old gypsy out twice with a RED ribbon in her tail and someone complained that she kicked out when they came close behind her when we were stood, even though i had stood well away well from everyone else they had come over and stood near me. I told them that obviously she was wearing a RED ribbon for a reason and i had stood away from everyone for a reason!

But why risk letting him 'go loopy' and potentially blowing his brain for hunting forever?
 
I would say its a bad idea.

But ime at least 50% of the field on Boxing Day are green horses/mad horses/novice riders/people whose sole intention is to gallop into your horses quarters, jump across you and kick your horse and half the hounds.
One of the many reasons I do not hunt on Boxing Day!

So I'd say go for it, what's one more loopy horse?

I wouldn't dream of taking a horse new to hunting out on Boxing Day. I'd rather come home with both of us alive and having not injured anyone else!

Also, our senior master goes ballistic if people turn up on inexperienced horses on big days like Boxing Day. We have plenty of quiet mid week meets, and lots of cubbing, so why risk ruining one of the biggest and busiest days of the year for other people?
 
For those following this thread I have just seen the OP's hunt report.................It didn't go well.........

Easy option would have been to have taken it straight home- but decided that was not a good education, so trotted it up the hill and around the valley where I ran into the hunt again - lots of photos being taken of the very stig of the dump me.......got back to the field who were standing in the road - reunited with children......Good nip of someones hip flask, and decided to head for home - as I went up the road a hound came out of the hedge from the left, and horse thinking it must be another 1,000 volt electric fence gave it both barrels......hound knocked out...dead? MFH said ride on - and so me and theehorse did - still quite electric really! Got home in one piece - called MFH later - Hound OK. I am OK, but will be terribly stiff tomorrow!
Sad for the horse really - he will be OK - but did not need the electric fence thing - why do landowners give permission for the hunt to go across their land, and leave the fencers on (on Boxing Day, when there are far too many horses out?)
But then of course I should have taken my youngster out on a quieter day - but when hunting days are weekdays, and I work full-time, I am limited in the times I can go out....Hind sight is a wonderful thing!

Thanks for keeping an eye out for me Piebald Sparkle - you are right it did not go that well - but could have been far worse (the horse was a star at the meet) and it was not for the damned electric fence - we might have been OK..........LOL !!
 
Boxing Day is just mental, I absolutely hated going out on my horse and never really enjoyed it. He was a lot to handle when we reached the end of where he was really sane (he'd do 90 minutes pretty well, the next 30 minutes were a bit less good, and after that he was gone, brains splattered across the countryside). I'd always go home with 15 minutes of our time left so we could get to the lorry safely- no one seems to do that anymore. They just wait until it's too much for the horse and it all goes wrong and ends messily... The times I pushed him, we ended the day with tears and a horse who took a week to touch the floor again. Gave it up as a bad job after 3 years though- he was 25 by then and never going to change!
 
I'm a little staggered that you are actually boasting about these exploits. You got lucky, as did the poor hound *shakeshead*
 
I hate Boxing Day meet. Just for people to pose around on your horses at the meet. Hunting is always rubbish as the field is too big and full of idiots like yourself ruining the day for everyone.
I can't believe you just left the hound. Huntings cruel? It is when you let your horse get away with potentially killing a hound and not doing anything about it!!! You should have told someone IMMEDIATELY!!!

Whoa!!! Did you READ the post - OPs said the MFH asked her to ride on! So she did leave the hound without anyone being aware! What did you want her to do? Dismount and give it mouth to mouth??
 
Misread and thought MFH was a forum member not the hunt, as she then said she went home with another forum member. Apologies- did realise but couldn't edit as on phone!

Thanks PBS.......Also I felt terrible, as one does, and I did ring the MFH this evening, and she was more concerned about me (the fall she witnessed me having was on a scale of 1-10 - about a 9) and the Hound was OK......was knocked out for 15 mins - but recovered and went home in the Hound Lorry with all the others - I have been hunting for about 30 odd years now - and sort of know the etiquette......
Blooming hunt field - giving those people who want to go out on a quiet week day a hard time - what are they thinking of? Out hunt has had kennel cough - not been able to hunt for over a month - I am guessing that all those 'numpties' - me included paying circa £65 for the pleasure was welcomed when finances are tough?

Clearly you are well up on Hunting - MFH - oh what could that stand for........I don't want this post closed down, so I will not hazard a guess - Your quiz questions for tonight also are
A) What is the Stern also know as?
B) What is a Mask known as?
C) Record on You Tube the exact blows on the hunting horn for 'gone away'.........

Sheer lunacy...

Someone had a go at me once via pm, for daring to take a 4 y/o OTTB out on a quiet day, hope they're having a field day with this one!

Our big day is xmas eve, so despite the ex-racers now having a couple of meetings under their belts, I still took more experienced horses out, as it would be unfair to subject youngsters to the chaos.

I'm not going to answer those questions as a simple google search would tell anyone the answers so I feel it proves nothing. I think I could give a pretty good bash at the answers though- some of the things I learnt back in pony club doing my hunting badge! :) I'm not a hunting boff. i enjoy a good days hunting, only recently managed to get back out as my current horse is only a youngster but she's been a cracker so far! :)
 
My mare is not a youngster, but no way on this earth am I taking her hunting EVER :D. I was invited to go with the huntsmans partner, as a guest, to a hunt they were visiting, I would have loved to go, but there is no way that she would have behaved (think brain fry and whirling dervish!). I am still trying to work out if my friend, who knows my mare well, was secretly trying to get her chap into serious hot water by asking me :D :D :D

Google? I am impressed Broadford Queen that your horse is so quiet you can get your ipad or tablet out to see what you should know when you embark within the hunting field (miaow......I am about to stop and go to bed and never return, again to HHF - but I do need those closing barbs..........)

In fairness, she's a old-style PC person so would have known before she headed out. I know, and I hate going hunting (too many badly behaved horses to catch the bug). The PC hunting certificate is very helpful- the book you can get hold of is great and means you go out knowing what's going on. Reckon more people should do the research before they head out.

When we were first sent out, we were given a book on correct etiquette and things by our (non-horsey) parents so we'd know enough to get by. We were 10 and 7 at the time...

None of this is aimed at you btw, just my musings inspired by the comments in this thread :)

I don't think I was boasting - just telling it how it was - Eventually, I was OK, the horse was OK and so was the Hound - but we all had a very exciting time - and that is hunting really!

You are right - and after today, we all said that we would avoid Boxing Day in our Valley again - the hunting is just too far restricted and if we really wanted to educate our horses we would take them stag hunting. Though my youngster was not being very forward going, so we felt that hunting might give him some more confidence - as you can see it did / and it did not...... but a bit more interesting for him then trying a Pirreli type education, in a sand pit with some ropes......I also watched my daughter riding a TB today and riding it so well (with a mixture of controlling it with legs and hands and then saying find your own way when the going was tough) It is hunting that makes our top class eventers and sometimes SJ's as well.......
