And for those of you who have hairy beasts like myself do you take your furries to get groomed/deshed/bathed?

Aww he looks lovely!

I had a very thick and fluffy coated border collie. I brushed him every few days with a metal comb to get the loose hair out. He had a bath twice a year, with the worst rinsed off with water in between baths. In the summer when it got hot I shaved the underside of his belly to keep him cool.

Wow, what a big boy!

I have a LSH German Shepherd although more frilly, yours looks very heavy coated. I manipulate his coat a couple of times a week with my hands, which stimulates the glands and helps checks for parasites, and use a comb or long toothed brush to get dead hair and undercoat out. Grooming also increased the bond between you and your dog - ten minutes a day or every other day is all you need to do really.

If he has an undercoat it is really important to keep him well groomed to ensure he is comfortable, especially in the heat.

He swims and I have a standpipe so if he needs a bath I do it myself.

I would not advocate using a Terminator and definitely don't clip a GSD unless for some medical reason...I had never heard of that until I came on here.

I have a GSD X with a double (or triple - who knows!) coat. I groom daily for about 10-15 minutes to keep it sleek. I've given up on caring about the house!

Wow he is big and beautiful! I have a longcoated GSD as well as a standard coat, but the longcoat doesn't have as big a coat as your boy. I do groom him every few days otherwise he ends up a bit knotty and matted. My sister is a dog groomer and used to bath and groom my longcoated GSD bitch (sadly no longer with me) and she did a fab job, so definitely something you could consider once or twice a year if you wanted.

Haha definitely won't use the terminator on him... or clip. His belly isn't too hairy but Would consider a clip underneath if he did get far too hot thanks for that tip umbongo! Any tips for tail brushing.?... it really is his least favourite part of life is getting that hog bushy tail brushed!

Tough love. Mine didn't like being groomed as a youngster but it's not optional. I just held him in place with a slip lead in my right hand, let him hold a ball and got on with it with brush in left hand, all tantrums ignored. Used the nearest wall if he was being a wriggly worm.
He adores being groomed now and doesn't need a gobstopper. You can also use your hands on the tail.

If he's a sensitive soul rather than just being a git ;) you need to desensitise, just do it the way you would anything else, start slowly and make the brush a positive thing and work your way there. Ideally the dog should be used to a brush of his tail at 8 months old but he is still young enough to accept it with good training.

A squizz of Show Sheen helps get the tangles out too. Or pre-coat if you know he's going to be somewhere muddy.

Great idea might try a bit of the showsheen!!

Yay, lovely pupdate, what a handsome chap he is.
I've read that you shouldn't clip double coated dogs as it means they can't keep themselves cool.
