So i was talking to this girl, she is really lovely most of the time but i started to ask why she didt want ponies anymore, she said cause i just want big horses now, fair enough.. as i joke i said i would like another horse but cant cause the cost of livery, i said i was told i was out-growning ebs who is 15.1hh but as im not alowed another ill just ride short  then she started saying oh how shes 5.2ft and is far to big for her 16.2! when she get off the bigger ones then puts a sad face!!!! and how she feels sorry for me cause i stuck with a silly little 15.1hh and she rides some big 18hh grade A and 17.3hh whitaker horse, and she can go choose another horse whenever she wants cause she has her own yard...... now saying oh it doesnt matter 15.1hh can jump, as good as 16/17hh but why say all that then!
Im sorry but i dont want to sit there listening to your sob story about how hard it must be to have all this big top showjumpers!
why feel sorry for me? i have a great little 15.1hh yes maybe im a bit tall for but seriously!
i dont care if people have horses 10x better jumpers than mine great for them , it happends 80 % of the time but why go on and on and on that you HAVE THEM!! its nice to say oh iv got this but keep bragging.. egh :o

RANT over :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAZp8bEKpqc video when i first got back riding not very great.. but some CC? please [it is CC that means crit? :o]

life is chock full of bullsh***ers, best ignored!!

cc = constructive crit!

I would keep an eye on your trot diaganols (outside shoulder going back = sit!)
Would be nice to see your legs under you a little more and also a steadier trot at times. Think energy not rushing, you can slow your rising down a touch to steady things up without relying on your hands.

I've had a 17.2, a 16.2 AND A 16HH I now have a 15.1 and he is the best of the bunch by far and I wouldn't swap him for the world.....

He cleared a 5 bar gate on saturday (wasn't supposed to and was running away from me at the time!!) but as a 4year old it shows his potential. So don't worry you love her and that's all that matters. I've some tell me they would never buy a chestnut (mine's as ginger as they come!!) peoples opinions differ so what??

Haa ;)
i know i seem to be really bad on them... im working on it :o
would like riding like a tad longer help me to put my legs under her more? caue i ride very short :p
thanks alot :) x

I understand why it is annoying if this person brags. But think about it this way, she probably doesn't feel that good about herself if she needs to put other people down. Or - alternatively, perhaps she is so happy about these horses that she cannot help herself from bragging? :-) Just ignore her and have fun with your own horse.

I am 5.2" and now that my wonderful 15.2/3 is retired and won't have a ridden career, I have pretty much decided to return to ponies and if I buy a horse it will be 14.1/14.2" :-) But each to their own. If she wan's to ride huge horses then leave her to it.

CC = conformation critique

hmm yeah never thought about it like that... :o
Yeah like you can be 3ft foot and ride a 18hh i dont care but when shes goes your not to big me being 5.10 on 15.1hh and her saying she huges 5.2 on 16.2hh its like really?
thanks :p

I had a look at the video but could not see your position that well. Do you have the opportunity to ride for an instructor, who could take a look and help you?

If not, it may be useful to take a look if the school has a mirror - or even have a friend take some photos square on so you can see whether your basic position is correct (compare to illustrations or diagrams in good books about riding/dressage.)

thanks alot :) x

i find riding longer helps me to keep my legs under me (legs too far forwards is a bad habit of mine!), but then I find it more comfortable to ride longer anyway as my knees are a bit knakked!
Do you ride short because you are worried that ebs is getting a smidge small for you? Some of your posts suggest it might be something that troubles you abit. If so then ignore it and ride with your stirrups at the right length to be an effective rider! No one gives points for size of rider matched to horse so ignore it! fwiw I rode my 13.2 welshie until I was about 17 and 5'6'', I am now on my 15.3 and am 5'9'' - she is plenty big enough for me! My oh's mare is 16hh and he is 6'1'' and not too big for her. Sometimes people go a bit mad on having a massive horse for some reason. You are clearly not too heavy for ebs, so you are not too big for her - don't worry what people think so much!

maybe she is really really really really really heavy - if at 5.2" she thinks she is too big for a 16.2hh ?? ;-) Maybe she was hoping for you to tell her that she is not too heavy.

if not, she must just have a very big ego if it is too big for a 16.2" ???

just a bit, like theres a pic i just posted and thats me long ish and my feet are past her belly :o
like my old intrustor said i was outgrowing her cause i have long top of my legs? so if i ride to short as i do it pushes me back to the back of saddle and that will effect my riding? :)
thanks alot :) x

Riding without stirrups will help you with your leg position and you will soon begin to ride longer. Everytime you ride you should be doing at least 15 mins without stirrups. Make sure your horse is warmed up first, don't be doing sitting trot on a cold back. Do this for a couple of weeks (presuming you ride most days?) and you will see an improvement in your position and I think you will begin to lengthen your stirrups.

If you just put your stirrups down it might make the leg position worse, usually what happens is the leg shoots forward.

btw, I also love smaller horses and one of mine is 14.2! Don't listen to this girl, it's personal preference and as long as you're not too heavy I don't see the problem. :)

Ohh, i have been doing more no stirrup work :D cause i want to try ride longer :o
yeah 5/6 days a week :p
soo do i :D love the little ones :p wish i was a tad smaller :o
thanks :) x

That is a very shiny horse :-)

In the photo, your leg seems slightly forward (think having a straight line from your hip) -which is what you mentioned above. If you have the opportunity for someone to lunge you, I find it helpful to ride a bit on the lunge without stirrups to work on my leg position. Due to stiff hips my legs often end uo quite far forward.)

It also looks like your elbow is a bit tucked in but it could be just the moment the photo was taken.

goood! took ages ;) lol
Hmm i could ask but the intrustor hasnt been coming to the yard as its winter and darker ect so less people want lessons so it pointless :o
yeah i was about to walk off :p
thanks x

yeh, if you are long hip to knee then if you ride shorter then it can push you back in the saddle abit. No probs when you are jumping as you might find you feel more secure like that, but for flatwork I would drop your stirrups a few holes.
You look just fine in your showing pic, no worries about the length of your legs! I would concentrate on riding with your stirrups the right length and forget about what your legs look like (you look just fine so you can stop worrying about it!).
When I ride dressage length on my mare my legs come a little lower than yours in your showing pic. I'm not too big for her and can happily ride her effectively with long or short stirrups!
I think we have become a little used to seeing tiny slips of girls riding strapping warmbloods, makes anyone riding something more matched to their height look like pony squishers!

Yeah..so he said i was out growing and thats going to be a big problem?
Ahh its going hurt my poor legs for the first few days ;)
thanks alot though :) x
ahahahahaa that made me smile :p pony squishers :p

So not a big problem!! Not a terribly helpful comment from an instructor! You really look absolutly fine on her.
Yes it really will make your legs ache! If you find it harder to ride with long stirrups then keep your stirrups at a length you are comfortable with and warm up with them like that, then drop them a hole and carry on. If you are finding it hard to keep your stirrups then try and keep yourself relaxed, sitting tall and with your heels heavy. Only drop your stirrups a hole when you are comfortable at their current length. Little steps makes it easier and minimizes the 'my legs are falling off' feeling!!

How silly! Size doesn't matter! I have 4 horses that I ride ranging from 14.2hh to 17.3hh, and actually I prefer the smaller ones as I am 5'2" I find them easier to hold together. Get better marks in dressage and feel safer and more confident jumping. If ever I were to get another I would definately go for smaller, 15-16hh suits me ideally.

Anyway whatever you are happy with is fine.

Try to maintain Ebs energy but slow her speed. ATM all the energy is running out the front door and she isn't very active behind.

It was really hard to see your position but the overall picture is pleasing and you look to be in harmony with your horse. Echo the work without stirrups, I know its a pain (literally) but is worth every minute you spend doing it; nothing else improves your seat half as well.

And don't worry about her size.. you and she are fine together.

I'm 5'6 and ride a 14hh madam. She is gorgeous but has more than her fair share of attitude (possibly little man syndrome!) It would be interesting to see if the gloating girl could cope with her... especially when jumping!

Seriously, ignore her. Your horse is lovely and you look absolutely fine on him. If shes too big on a 16.2hh at 5foot 2, theres no hope at ALL for me - I'm 5'8 and my pony is a 14hh fell :p
