Has anyone got any experiences or knowledge?
I have a mare who has always been quirky with behavioural issues - very highly strung, fizzy and used to have huge napping/rearing issues. This has all been put down to a physical problem which was found, resolved and 3 years of being reschooled, she is relatively 'normal' although still has the odd meltdown. She isn't doing a lot at the moment as I'm a working pupil at an event yard, my eventer is here with me. I decided to leave her at home with my mum and retired mare as didn't feel I'd have time for her at the moment to do her justice and figured it wouldn't do her any harm to take it easy for a year or two. A friend of my mums rides her a couple of times a week and gets on very well with her.
Anyway just a bit of background. Today the girl who rides her took her out for a ride and lead. She was extremely aggressive to the other horse, apparently literially charging at him and trying to attack. I don't know if she has ridden and led with her before and she is stabled next to this horse but not turned out so I assumed she was just being her usual dominant self. I have ridden and led her with my retired mare (when retired mare was still in work) and had no problems.
Then my mum called me. Basically since lunchtime she has been in her stable and literally throwing herself around, kicking the Walls ect. Mum said she's been too dangerous to go into the stable. This continued and this afternoon, she tried to pin my mum against the wall and kick her.
Whatever faults Lacey has, aggression towards people has never ever been one of them. She is the most affectionate, sweet ponies I've ever met. The only reason I put up with her behaviour for the last 6 years was because of her kind temperament- literally never lifted a hoof unless in serious pain.
The vet was called earlier, then again later when she wouldn't settle and he came and sedated her. Depending on how she is tomorrow, he said he would advise a blood test for a ovary tumour and a brain scan.
No one has any idea what could of set this off, she's not touching food either which is very unlike her.
Does anyone have any similar experiences?
