Just an update on my last post re my dog Malic going for MRI scan. Well its a brain tumour and they also found one in his neck

It cant be treated with chemo. They have sent him home on anti convulsant drugs to help stop his fits but they cant treat the tumours. We are devestated. The only way you would know that he had these tumours is that he has been having these fits. ( 4 in total ) He is happy in himself and still running around like an idiot. We have decided to see how he goes and if he starts to go downhill or the fits dont stop then we will let him go.
Has anyone had any dogs on Potassium Bromide? ( for epilepsy ) were there anyside effects? Has anyone had a dog diagnosed with a tumour and how long before they go downhill and with what effects?
Sorry to ask these questions its just we want to make sure we are making the right decision for Malic and not ourselves.
 

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Malic. Can't help with any info about the drugs etc, but I'm crossing my fingers that he stays fit and active for a long time to come.

No experience of the drug in question, but i hope he stays well, comfortable and active for as long as possible!!
 
potassium bromide and phenobarbitone (Epiphen) are the most common drugs used for seizures. They can both cause an increase in appetite, increased drinking and urinating, lethargy and ataxia (wobbliness), all depending on the dose and the animal. Can also cause sickness and diarrhoea.

My boxer started having fits and I diagnosed a brain tumour based on her fits, her age, breed etc - wasn't going to put her under anaesthetic for an MRI at 12yrs old just to confirm what I already knew. She had no treatment for it. In between her fits she was completely normal, but eventually the fits started coming closer together and afterwards left her blind and incoordinated and this period was also lasting longer. We decided to put her to sleep when the fits were coming every day. THis was probably around 6months after her 1st fit - cant remember exactly. We could have kept her going longer, but it wouldn't have been fair. She was 12 and a half when she died which is a fab age for a Boxer and I'm hapy she didn't suffer. Good luck with yours and keeping him happy as long as possible.
 
Thanks for the info. He can only have the potassium bromide as the other drug affects his cardiomyopathy ( he is on medication for this but since starting on the medication 2 years sgo has had no further effects of the disease ) I only hope Malic has as long as your boxer. Touch wood he has had no fits since we had to rush him to the vets last sunday. He is ten now coming on eleven so he's a good age. He too is very active and the only effects of the tumour is the fitting. Myself and my boyfriend have had a long chat and decided as soon as the other symtoms start to show will be the time we let him go.

So sorry to here this I really hope Malic will be ok and got my fingers crossed that he will keep going for you. Don't know anything about the drugs though, sorry. x
 
Big hugs - take every day as a gift with him and enjoy - the drugs long long term (several years) might take a toll on his liver - but they will give you some more precious time with him

my old girl also had cardiomyopathy - we always thought she'd die of that. she was diagnosed when she was 9 and the vets gave her 6 months to live. 3.5yrs later and we chose to have her pts because of the fits - her heart was still battling on - she was a real fighter. been 2.5yrs since we lost her, but writing this still makes me cry - she was my best friend and i know how hard this must be for you. really enjoy the time you have left with your guy - boxers are truly the best.
