My ancient trailer has been serviced and has nothing majorly wrong with it, phew! It does however need new brake pads and shoes, which is the very least I expected due to the age and state I bought it in.

Anyway, the mechanic doesnt supply them but will come back and fit them once I have them. Its a Bahill so I need to find generic replacements and to do that I need to know the measurements.

How on earth do I measure that? The mechanic said something about brake shoes being 7.5" and pads being 6" but according to the brake manufacturer that cant be right. I've messaged him to double check, but in the mean time if I can work out what and how to measure I can just do it myself. Google has been no help at all!

Sorry but I tried for a good year to get some they do not exist - I was advised to replace the axels. I sold the box at loss as NOT for animal transport (it became a stationary cafe type thing)

Hopefully you have more luck than me :/

Who made the axles? I had this problem with my '70s Rice trailer. I looked up brake shoes for Avonride axles and found some that way. Brake pads? Does your trailer have discs too?

I got mine from a caravan parts company, who were very helpful. The alternative is re-lining the original shoes, but I'm not sure you can do that with pads. And it isn't cheap to do.

I actually have no idea. The mechanic said I could just buy replacement generic ones and to do it by size. Then told me the size but I think I wrote it down wrong. Its times like this that I wish I'd paid more attention!

Measure the drum Diameter and depth which should narrow it down!

Most likely shoe size will be 200X50mm,surely a quick call to the mechanic would put you right . This is a good source of what you need , I use them for all our trailer running gear.

If you measure centre to centre( MMs) on adjacent studs and give me number of studs ,I can most likely give you the right size shoes for that hub.

I did ring but he didnt answer. I know he had a big job on all afternoon. But you've told me exactly what I need to know, thank you. I'll go down in a bit and measure. 200 x 50 is almost certainly the right size, but I'd rather not get it wrong and have to faff sending them back. I suspect the mechanic will call me back at 6ish anyway when hes finished, but its always good to know how to do these things yourself!
