does any one feed a bran mash any more as wondered if it would be a good pick me up for an eventer at the end of the day. if people do feed it then how do they make it up as there are several recipes!!

that would be a no then. never mind, was just flicking through an old vet manual which said they were brill though the book is around 40yrs old!

I have not fed bran for donkeys years, one of the reason I stopped (many moons ago) was due to the poor quality and total lack of food value.

I know that when I come home from a competition tired and Hungry, I want a big plate of steak and chips, not sawdust.

I'm a traditionalist.

I feed a warm mash for lunch every day - sorts out that whole change in diet thing!

I use Rowan Barbary Fibre Ready Mash, with epsom salts,
honey and carrots.

It seems to work for my girls.

I don't use bran as there is not much nutritionl benefit to it and it saves working out the cal:phos rate.

Feeding everyday is fine, as long as you make up the calcium content - it's the feeding occassionally that is a problem - it completely upsets the gut flora.

I feed a bran mash supplemented with limestone flour and epsom salts to my lad if he is chilled or has a touch of colic etc. My mother's horse had colic recently and the vet told her to give him a nice bran mash

I always have bran in the feed room, love it.

Ellie had bran every night through the winter - although I have been told I cannot call it 'bran mash'

. She has a scoop of pasture mix, a handful of nuts and a double handful of sugar beet, mixed in with three-quarts scoop of bran and lots of warm water, always served sloppy so she can drink it!

Mine have Bran mixed in with chaff, nuts and a mix to bulk out there feed and i feed limestone, cider vinegar, magic, oestress, garlic and salt. Sounds alot but my horses look amazing, if I do say so myself! So if they have got wet in the field they have there normal feed with a bit more bran and have it warm so I guess thats not quite a bran mash but they love it, wouldnt be without bran!
