Could anyone help me? The pony I have just bought has a brandmark - it is not white so it can't be a freezemark and it only has one letter and a dash (-). Does anyone know anything about these?
Thanks

what sort of pony?

i only ask becasue dartmoior ponies that are from the moors have brands on them to dictate who they belong to...we had a dartmoor here which was nicknamed playstation due to having all the playstation symbols on her bum..

i dont know whether welshies or exmoors do the same??

thanks -he is a registered new forest pony, his sire runs wild in the forest. do you think the new forest association peple might know?

If the pony is a NF then you can go on a website and see all of the brands how they appear on the animal

Just google new forest ponies brand marks.. or something similar and you will find it if its there, will also tell you the breeder

I expect it will be a pony that was born on the forest . The brand is most likely that of his breeder which will be in his passport. If you tell us his prefix, or who his breeder is, I can look it up in the studbook for you if you like.

thanks, his breeder on the passport is K ROSTIGINA. I think he is forest bred, what exactly does that mean?

Forest bred means that he was sired by one of the stallions running out on the forest out of one of the mares running out, and he would have been born out there too. In other words, a "proper" NF pony, not a poncy stud bred one! (Nothing against the stud bred ones by the way)

So do they just catch them out of the forest and sell them?

PMSL @ U penny...

i have to agree with you, though!!!

Well in very simple terms, YES! Either the commoner (a person who has rights that come with land that entitle them to turn out ponies on the forest) will go out and bring in the mare and foal, or else the mare and foal will come in on one of the drifts which take place in the autumn. Basically a drift is a "round up" of all the ponies in a certain area. They are driven en masse into a pound build specially for this, they are dotted all over the forest, and one by one they are "processed". Tails are cut into one of 3 shapes depending on the area they run in, reflective collars put on, maybe they are wormed if their owner wants them to be and has brought wormers along. Filly foals staying out for the winter are branded, colt foals tend to be taken off their mothers and taken home by the owner, possibly to go off to the Beaulieu Road Sales. The brand tells the agisters who the owner of the pony is.

www.verderers.org may give you a bit more information. I expect I've missed bits out

Cant for the life of me find it now

but you can ask these people...

A variety of different brands but they can be pinned down to the breeder. A list of these brands is available in the New Forest Stud Book from Randells Farm, Burley street, Nr Ringwood, Hants, BH24 4HJ.

Might be worth a try
