How do you feel about branding? Hot brands and freeze brands. Just trying to figure out the psyche of the majority of posters on here.

I said yes to both. Freeze branding is a more obvious yes as it clearly helps with identification if stolen. I have my own horse freeze marked.
Hot branding is a slightly more dubious yes but even so i think it helps identify the breeds and is quite an historic tradition. I would have quite liked my girl to carry the trakehner brand but breeder chose not to.
I suppose the difference is that horses have no choice in the matter so, especially hot branding, can be viewed as cruel but i reckon if they did have the choice plenty of them would say yes, cos plenty of humans readily agree to body piercing and tottoos!!!!

I have horses who are hot and freeze branded so no I don't have a problem with either types of brands.

I voted no on the hot and yes on the cold one. There is probably not that much difference with regard to pain and subsequent skin damage caused by either method I would guess? Unless someone knows which one is more traumatic and would care to enlighten us as it would be interesting to know.
I suppose I said no to hot branding as it always looks more barbaric but I suppose that viewpoint would depend on which part of the world you lived in and which method was more widely available and accepted. Not having a dig at anyone btw in saying that it's just that I have not see much if any hot branding in the UK which is the reason I said what I did. Now if I had been born and raised or lived in another part of the world my viewpoint on this poll may be different?
Good poll though and interesting to see people's views on this subject

I think it comes down to the fact that hot branding looks so much more painful than freeze branding. I had a pony freeze branded and she didn't seem to suffer in any way from it, although I guess the 'after' pain as it heals is probably the same intensity. I put 'no' to hot and 'yes' to freeze from me.

I'm sure somebody will educate me and say they are both as painful as each other for the horse!

Both are ok with me, if it helps to identify then it can only be a good thing.
My boy is branded, it doesn't seem to have affected him at all

Having seen both done, neither seem to cause a massive amount of stress to the horse but I'm still uncomfortable with hot branding. This is because I only saw hot branding on a tv programme about exmoor ponies, I would rather see it 'for real' and unedited before I said I thought it was ok.

The only difference really is that with hot branding it is much much quicker and the smell is not particularly nice. Freeze branding takes longer but no horrible smell.

Fine with both, prefer hot - I have personally hot branded over 20 horses, and can absolutely guarentee that if you do it properly it takes a second and the horse hardly even reacts.

I am a firm believer in Freezemarking, I have never witnessed a hot branding in 'real life' so have the odd doubt, but generally, I think it is OK. I voted yes to both.

Same with me really as I have never seen a hot branding except on tv so it's hard to comment on the method completely really.
I didn't even know that there was hot branding done in the UK probably because it is perhaps not advertised as much or publicised as much as freezemarking?
A good poll though Tia and unless H&H have covered it already in their features it may be a good feature article/debate for a future copy of the magazine.
Saying just in case admin are reading lol.

I said "Yes" to both, have no problems with either. In fact prefer the Hot branding. Have seen it done to foalies and mares and if done correctly its on and off in seconds................it a great way to identify a horse.

Its just a shame that the KWPN dont do it any more.....which I know angered the breeders who wanted to continue.
