I personally believe that this form of identity is the only way forward.

It is entered into the horses passport/breed society papers and is there for life.

instantly recognisable.

it is done on the Continent and Australia and they seem to have non existant registration/passport problems.

so why not here???

What do you mean by branding? A stud or breed brand? It won't work here as too many small time breeders and it will just be another cost.

nope, not a stud or breed brand...something on the lines of a reg no similar to a car.

it would work regardless of cost if it was compulsory...

Like freezemarking?

KWPN have now banned branding - well the Dutch have. The Scottish KWPN society still brands.

not freezemarking..hot iron.

all animals over the age of 4 months to be "marked" like the forest ponies who onwers have a "mark"...

any animal brought off moors/forests etc to be marked..
stud bred..
privately bred

ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.

It would work, one central database, one central body

What about the people who breed privately and don't bother branding because they wouldn't pay a fine etc if they got caught, anyway? Another way of penalising the law abiding and letting the lawless get away with things imo I'm afraid

My OH was gobsmacked at the lack of registration horses receive. He couldnt understand why my mare's dam and sire were never registered and to us remain unknown. He was thinking it would be like greyhounds, as they are all tatooed they are all logged onto a data based and you can trace any race, breeding you name it.

My mare isnt freezemarked, purely because I dont think the administration back up there to warrant having it done.

She is microchipped and I think this is the way forward, any where you go they should be scanned and the number checked against a pass port. Even at events, sales ..... everywhere.

However policing it and keeping all the information up to date is another thing.

I dont like the look of it and it also must be bloody painful! You only have to look at that vid on You Tube of the guy getting a massive kick whilst doing it.

Also, they're often not done well. One of my current horses is meant to be branded in 2 places (breed brand on thigh and a number on his neck) but Ive never seen it...! He does have a very slight odd bit on his neck which seems to spell out "RIP" which is bloody scary though!

I think microchipping is the way forward also.

I wonder why the Dutch have banned it?

Sure it only hearts for a few seconds and then the nerves are dead. Is it the smell that was deemed offensive?

no difference IMO between hot and cold branding..one is "burning" hot..the other is "burning" cold.

also the cold brand needs to stay on the skin longer to kill the hair pigmentation.....
