Can someone explain about branding . We have a Westphalian mare who is branded but we can hardly see it. Do they still hot brand?
What age do they do it? Does it matter if they are not branded? Which brand do they have is it the stud book they are reg. with?
Sorry but I have very little knowledge of this.
Thank you

I'm not sure about Westphalian branding but I have a pink papered Hanoverian filly who I took to the Regional Show when she was 3 months old in order to get her passport. She was hot branded here - didn't bat an eye - I was soo worried about that aspect of things! The brand disappeared over winter with her woolly coat, but is becoming noticeable now that her summer coat is coming through.

I have 2 bay Holsteiner mares and their brands are very noticable. I have a grey Hanoverian and apart from when it was first done when she was around 4 months old, it's been rather elusive ever since. I have a black mare who is branded on her neck with her registry brand and her's has always been very clear but another grey mare who has also been neck branded with the registry brand falls into the category of you can barely see it anymore.

With the youngsters they are branded on their near thigh with their registry brand at their foal inspections. They will have their number branded below the registry brand. With some registries once the mare passes into higher books she will be branded again, on the neck.

I've had lots of youngsters and mature mares branded and none have flinched or bothered about it.

I too have a westphalian that is branded and you only usually see it when she is bathed or clipped
Yes they hot brand .. saw them doing the foalies at the show last year and they really hardly noticed.

Germany still hot brands and it is a quick method there is no evidence that the horse feels any more pain that microchipping one of my two foals reacted more to the chip insert than the brand. Think of the horses skin reacting to the cold snow and ice and realize it is a hide not a skin like yours. The number branded is part of the 15 digit UELN. A friend of mine says she has more problems with chips than brands.

I have 3 yr old Hanoverian and I only see his brand in the spring when he changes his coat, although it is faintly visible in the summer. Once he turns into a bear for winter it is lost again until the following spring.

We did hot brand with BHHS but can no longer do it due to changes in the law in Scotland - I have to agree with those who have said that the foals seemed more perturbed with the microchipping than ever they were with hot branding - that has certainly been our experience.

umm, mine certainly noticed it although he was nearly 2 yr old. I had his head in feed bucket the man came in and put brand on him, he kicked out and jumped in the air at the same time and then as he landed his head went straight back into feed bucket as if nothing had happened. You cant see it at all in winter and only at certain angles in summer.

I had two hot branded, first jumped a little, and in the end when he was grown the brand was barely visable. Second stood like a rock, eyes wide, but no other reaction.
Microchipping has been a lot more exciting here as well, maybe because it has to go a lot deeper into them!
