my horse has a branding that is rather intresting. he originally came from the netherlands. it is a sheild with a W in it and under it has a number 18. Anyone know anything about this ??
thanks

It sounds like a Westphalian brand to me too.
My mare has the 'cupcake' with a W inside and a number 18 underneath. She is registered as a 'Kaltblut' (coldblood/draught) and actually looks more like an Ardennes. My vet told me that she had seen one which looks more like a Haflinger. My mare was bred in Germany (I have her papers and 5 generation pedigree) but has a KWPN passport from the Netherlands.

Do you have any photos as that sounds the same as ronnie my hafflinger, I would love to know what his branding is.

Sorry, no photos. You can only just see my mare's brand now that her coat has grown back - she was clipped out when I got her in Feb. But you can see the brand if you look it up on-line.
AFAIK, the number underneath the 'cupcake' is the number of the brander. So that there is a separate way of tracing each horse, which can be compared to the paperwork which goes with the horse.
My mare's sire is traced back for 5 generations in her pedigree but her dam's parents are unknown. However the dam has a Westphalian society number with her year of birth in it, so I assume (perhaps wrongly) that she was a WestphalianxArdennes. I think the society allows outcrosses to be registered so as to avoid narrowing the gene-pool. I understand that colts can only be registered if they have 2 premium registered parents but fillies (and I think geldings) can be registered with just a premium sire.

hi again you cant see it in the pictures as he is grey and cant really make it out. he is a warmblood grade a showjumper if that helps lead to a specific breeder ect. its not that important i was just curious
