Can anyone please tell me what the sj standard at BRC Area qualifiers is like? I would be doing the lowest class which I believe is about 2'9" in old money

Are they extremely technical, with walls, scary fillers, water trays etc, or nice and inviting in the lowest class to encourage those of us who've never done it before?

I'm happily jumping 2'9" but my horse can be quite spooky if the mood takes him, and has deposited me on the floor at the sight of a horse-eating water tray before now, which doesn't really bother me if it's just me, but I don't want to let the team down

Or should I just bite the bullet and get on with it?

Im sure last year was 1st round 2ft6 and 2nd round was 2ft9.
No water trays, the course was long though but not scary

The pic in my sig of Murph jumping the sj was taken at our areas last year

Thanks, that's very reassuring! And your horse looks great

I prefer dressage, but have stupidly volunteered myself to make up numbers for a sj team - must be my age

3rd August, when's yours? We might have a go at the equitation jumping too, long way to travel just for one class, so might as well have a go - he does actually jump in a nice, smooth rhythm and doesn't rush, so should be quite good at that, it's just my position that will let us down, lol!

I think it depends where your qualifier is held and who builds the course.

In recent years our Area SJ has been held at a showground where they do Affiliated SJ, and the courses are built by the BSJA Registered coursebuilder.

I did the Intermediate a couple of years ago, and I remember the less than friendly 1st jump (an oxer with a strange painted filler) caused carnage with loads of people getting eliminated at it, and I wondered what had happened to the old days when the 1st jump was small and inviting!

I remember them being nicer at the Championships though!

Don't worry about it. The criteria in the rule book for the Novice course states the 1st 3 jumps are to be below maximum height, No Trebles at the areas and certainly no water tray! Hope that helps.
