Out of interest what do riding clubs fund for the individuals and teams that are lucky enough to qualify for the championships?

What is funded by the club and what is funded by the individual themselves?

Entry fees?

Transport costs & diesel?

Stabling costs?

Entry fees and stabling paid by Club.
Transport - usually try and get sponsorship, and add to it out of own pocket. Coming from Area 22, so a long way!

Wow, what lucky person. We have to pay for all our own cost. We do no fund raising for people going to champs. It is also 4 1/2 hours to get to summer champs.

I've honestly forgotten. I went to the Horse Trials Champs last year in the open (about 4 hours away) and Lincoln the year before for dressage. To be honest our club rarely qualifies an individual and hasn't qualified a team for about 5 years so it's not a big cost. I did a lecture/demo on arena XC techniques to fund raise for the club after I went to the HT Champs as I felt guilty that it cost them so much.

I think they paid everything bar about £20 for me, but they have a policy now where they will either pay entries or fuel (I forget which - but we're generally a long way for things so they're about even) but not both.

We pay the entries (stabling if needed but we are central so not normally needed) and if its a long way like when the dressage to music was at Aintree we covered a % of the fuel cost too. We hold regular eve dressage and SJ which makes some money and try to hold a successful area qualifier a year to help fund. Although we are rapidly becoming more successful so it may need a rethink in the future.

With 12-13 hours to go to Lincoln, 8-9 to Aintree its a big undertaking for our lot, so they need a little encouragement. God help us if we qualify for Music this year, that'll be 15 odd hours to get to!!

I believe our club has previously funded entries, stabling and some £ towards diesel depending on how many was going and how much the club could afford but was getting ridiculous especially when the team did not travel together for a variety of reasons. We are a long way also so nearly a 700 mile round trip so transport costs are substantial.

Previous teams have pulled together and done some fund raising and some individuals made an effort to fund raise as well but some don't. One expected the lot to be paid for representing the club so we want to have a clear policy from now on what the club will pay for.

Our committee was thinking of the club funding entries and up to the riders to fund raise (or not) for the remainder. Sound like this would be fair for most clubs.

We did some fund raising when we went - raffles and some other stuff. It paid for entries, stabling and some fuel.

Jnhuk - which club are you with?

I thought it was nice that the club paid for entry fees and stabling, then it was up to the competitor to fund their travel and accommodation. This seemed like a nice way to do it.

I went to the horse trials last year and my club paid for stabling and the entry fee.

Entry fees and stabling paid by Club.

I'm thinking entries and stabling but need to get folks involved helping the committee with some fund raising to help with diesel costs.

Thanks for everyone's input

My club gave each team member £ 100 to use as we saw fit. This was for the horse trials champs

Our club pays 50% of entries and stabling we seem to qualify a lot so funding is an issue. They have asked for fund raising ideas this year to try and help we have a 90.100, 100+ and individuals going to champs. We pay our own diesel.

My club will pay your entry. Last year however after I'd paid stabling for Windsor, then club then paid entry AND stabling for another team. Was a bit annoying as stabling at RWHS was more than the entry! Lincoln was a bit of a mess as we only found out I'd qualified when monkeybum13 spotted my name on the times list (No pack received by anyone from BRC, never been told I'd qualified, but was correct rider, horse and club!!!) so I paid everything and the club paid me back my entry. Didn't even get a mention in the club newsletter but that's another story.... lol!

The joys of BRC! Lucky your name was spotted and that you could go at short notice.

This is why we want to have a clear club policy so one person doesn't get treated differently to another one. In previous years we have had one individual going then a lot more going in the same year with a horse trials team, folks for SJ & dressage so meant the funding was spread more thinly but when there is a team going they tend to pull together to organise something as a fun raiser.

We ask for team/individuals for a report and photo so we can put that on the website page etc... but that is up to the people involved. Some people like publicity, others don't.

We also approach the local sports council for finding. Usually get £200 off them which helps. Have to provide a report and photos. One of the shows each year is dedicated to team funds but we usually use that money to pay for the entries/ stabling, but all team members have to help at it as a thank you to the club iyswim.

Ps we do also pay the initial qualifier entry to BRC and members pay the area entry - we used to pay more but had a spate of people putting their names down for teams, we did and paid entries, and then people dropped out as no financial incentive to honour entry!

My club pay half entry. Stabling and travelling are riders costs! I unfortunately can't stay this year so will be "commuting" Fri, Sat and Sun. Fortune in diesel- praying for not early times as its over 2hr drive
