I have just joined a Riding Club so I can competed in the new competiton at Winsdor Horse Show. Can someone please explain what is a Riding Test and who trains the judges for this. I was surprised at the poor standard of judging and riding. I thought it was to be judged on the rider and not how horse goes. If this is a BHS Riding Club I will be going back to Trail Blazers!

My mum did one of these on Sunday and we weren't impressed with some of the riders either. Some of the riders were very snooty and seemed to think they owned the warm up area.
Mum was a bag of nerves but rode well and got marked better than some of the people whose horses were step perfect. Which impressed me. But still prefer a dressage test than the rider tests.
The organisers and most of the members were lovely though.
Personally I'm just going to stay away from the riding tests and towards the jumping side I think.

The judges for the BRC Riding Tests are trained / assessed by members of the BRC Panel of Master Judges, & are required to attend a refresher every two years. The panel includes amongst others Donald Kear BHSI (Chairman of BRC training), & Patrick Print FBHS (Chairman of the BHS).
You are correct in that the test should be judged on the rider & not the horse.
May I suggest is that you email Chantal in the BRC office (brctraining@bhs.org.uk) with your concerns. If you know the name of the judge, & would be prepared to send in a copy of the test sheet so much the better. She will forward your comments to the training committee who will look in to your concerns.
I hope that your experiences with BRC will be nore positive in the future.

Thanks for that. But I have been talking to some friends who have been on the BRC training days and they have said it is a closed shop. I also understand that there have been problems in the past with reporting Riding test judges. Nothing has ever been done.
