I am trying to find breakdown cover that will cover my car when it is towing my trailer and also when it is not towing.
It seems that some 'car and trailer' schemes will only recover the car when it is actually towing and there are others that will not recover the car if it IS towing....
Mucho confused.

Does anyone have cover for the car and the trailer for towing and non-towing breakdowns ?
I don't really want to be buying a breakdown cover for the car on its own and then an additional one for when I am towing the trailer !

Recommendations would be much appreciated. :D

Everyone I knows gets breakdown cover for their vehicle with AA or Greenflag or such like.

and trailer cover for their trailer with someone like Anthony D Evan (for example).

I would recommend you contact Equine Rescue Services for advice. We have a horsebox not trailer so don't have exact details but am sure you join someone like RAC for car cover 24/7 then buy ERS as an add-on to cover horse and trailer. We have been with them more than 10 years and always fab service for our lorries.

You get your normal cover with RAC then you add your trailer cover with equine rescue services!

That's how it works quite simply.

When I joined the AA they told me that if I broke down with the trailer on they could recover me if it was empty but not if livestock was onboard. They said to join these http://www.horsebox-rescue.co.uk/ who gave me a discount due to being an AA member. Ive never had to use them yet but I'm sure its only about £40 a year xx

Aa or rac for trailer alone if you'd be able to make alternative arrangements for horses.

Unfortunately last time we broke down (travelling farm) we had 3 drivers turn up to take the trailer. First two turned up and said they'd been told it was a 2 wheel open car trailer and so was too big to recover. Both assured us that livestock would be moved with trailer on appropriate vehicle. Third guy turned up and said they didn't move with livestock. Waited for the second farm trailer to arrive (which could have been there before first recovery guy had we known) and take livestock. Third guy had same size recovery but said he would load trailer. It fitted on by cms. He drove us half way home (about 45 mins) and then stopped at a motorway services and unloaded because his driving hours were up. Then waited for next driver. All in all took 6hours to get the right guy to us and a further 3 or so to do a 90 min journey.

Ironically the second break down (out of a total of two) was travelling from the same place and stopped at same services due to drivers hours again!

Lesson learned... Never travel to a certain place in the new forest!

Oh, I see that two separate breakdown policies are actually needed, there is deffo a gap in the market for a 'combined cover' for us horse owners !

No there isn't it would cost a flipping fortune! How many times to people actually tow? Once/twice per week at most?

Even with horsebox cover, although you pay one company they actually split a breakdown into two: regular truck rescue do the mechanical side, and the horse transport, vet or whatever are arranged by the specialist company.
I'd rather have a big company like RAC or AA with their huge network sort the towing vehicle. The arrangements mentioned are partnerships between ERS or whoever and RAC/AA where each company does their bit. Think you get discounts too.
