I have just bought a pair of Petrie Riding Boots Ebay bargin £35 :D they are almost new so need to break them in. I have always been a gaiters and boots girl so all tips welcome. Dad reckons I just get them wet and walk about in them for a day??? Calf is fine just the ankles are a bit rigid for me.

I have short fat legs so need to stretch as well as wear in my boots.

I spray them with loads of shoe stretcher, then put a 2 litre bottle wrapped in newspaper so it is very tight inside the boot. Every day, I spray and then add more layers of paper until the leather is stretched enough so my toes don't go blue - can take a week or so to do this. Once I can get them on and off without a huge effort, I go to stage 2.

Next, I put thick fabric plasters on my heels and any other area likely to rub plus a good pair of socks and start walking around and wearing them for increasing lengths of time. Again takes a few weeks depending on how long and how often you do this. What you want to avoid is blisters and sores or you won't want to put them on again until they have healed.

I love my boots once worn in and hate buying new ones.

I stamped about in mine at every opportunity, but what really did the trick, and quickly, was riding in them!

Second the peeing on them comment its the ammonia that softens the leather. Solution without the aiming and subsequent issues is to muck out a very wet bed pref dig out deep litter in them a couple of times and the ammonia does the job.

A tub of leather dressing, a cloth and a few episodes of eastenders was how I got my leather boots wearable (work and riding). Massage it in, work it with your hands, and it will give.
