OK possibly jumping a bit early here!! But getting excited!! my boy is coming up 2 years old soon and would like to introduce him to tack late this year/next year, so my only saddle I have is a bates dressage of my mares, which as much as I love it I don't want to a) risk damage to it! and b) I would like a more forward cut saddle to start him off with!!!! He's a warmblood btw! Anyway I'm looking initally at a synthetic saddle with changeable gullet etc until he's actually ridden forwards and then I can get a saddler in to fit a leather saddle. As it will be used for a very short period of time and will soon be replaced I don't want to be spending lots. So does anyone have any experience of these saddles?

Or the good old wintec, Although I don't find the old ones very comfortable.

Ive used old Thorowgoods.

However have started with a polypad and surcingle (only time I use a polypad lol)

I had a pony who was xxxw (I could balance my lunch on her back lol) didnt have a saddle really at all. Broke her with the pad and once she behaved enough I did her in my treeless.

I like the TG ones

What ever you buy stick to a one of the good makes TG are made in walsall and are stuffed with decent stuff, not like some of the others made in India etc that have been filled with all sorts of crap including sharp bits of plastic and metal

I backed mine with a thorowgood, it was great, did the job perfectly. I particularly liked how light it was, for a youngster being introduced to tack etc.

Back all my ones in old hunting style saddles, with no knee rolls and super flat! I find you cant get caught up in them if you're coming off, hate high cantles, nothing worse than hitting one of them :O

OP you sound just as bad as me! My youngster is rising 2 now and
I spend many a happy hour at work daydreaming about what saddle I'm going to get for him.
A wintec cair is topping my list at the mo. Nothing like getting ahead of yourself eh?! :D

I think it's really important that whatever you use, even if you are not riding in it, fits properly and is comfy for the horse. Just by girthing it up you can cause problems if it doesn't fit.

I do all mine in Solution treeless - expensive to buy, yes, but I can minutely adjust them so they fit perfectly, all the time, and they are lovely for the rider as you can feel every movement the horse makes. I find the backing process much easier since I started using treeless as well.:)
