Has anyone sent their horse / pony away to be broken to drive? can you give me a rough idea on how long it takes and costs?

My 13 yr old NF pony is finding long distance pleasure rides (my fav pastime) difficult due to bone spavins in her hocks. my vet is happy for me to try her in harness as she is far from ready to retire!

I already have the harness (as I'd planned this a couple of years ago, but laminitis but a hold on her training) and I already longrein her out in harness & blinkers with no problem. I need to send her away to be put to the cart as I don't have any experience in this. I'd like to know the approx costs if anyone can advise? Thanks

Contact the British Driving Society they can give you info on people that break to harness.

Just a word of caution when you get them back they will have only learnt the basics and the first 6 months a vital they need to be worked often really every day until they have settled into the job.

You do also need to remeber that not all ponies take to it well and older ones can prove totally unsuitable.

I paid £100 per week but that was 4 years ago. Took his (trainers) usual avergae of four weeks.
