hi there we are thinking of using a breastgirth on a horse which the girth seems to slip back and makes the saddles slip back a little too far and a breastplate isn't enough. the saddle has been checked and fits although the horse is one of those peculiar ones which there will always be some sort of issue but doesn't cause any marks or discomfort when it slips back . i really like the leather ones as i think they look smarter but was told that the elastic ones allow the horse to move its shoulders more??? opinions and experiences please thanks

Hey there, my breastgirth is plain leather leather as I always worry thatif the saddle slips a lot the elastic ones can stretch, tighten too much and cut of blood supply. But maybe you can get a leather one with elastic inserts for best of both worlds?

Regarding the use of one is the saddle simply slipping back to where it should naturally sit? Most of us put our saddles a good 4 inches further forward than they need to be. It could be the horses shoulder blade rotating and pushing the saddle back to a more correct place. I spent 3 weeks doing work experiance with a master saddler when i was at school and he spend all 3 of those weeks telling me off for putting saddles on too far forward but whilst working for a showjumper she would only jump with the thing halfway up her horses necks and I was constantly moving them forward!

my thoughts exactly re the elastic girth!! as for the saddle slipping back yes i know what you mean and we are aware of putting in the right place to start with its just the girth tends to slip back due to some reason the saddle kind of goes a bit too far back if you know what i mean as its a long saddle we need to keep it in place a bit more especially next week when the horse goes hunting in somerset !! all those hills would be nice to feel a little bit more secure!! thanks

I have been using an elastic breast girth for hunting, but been looking for an all leather one after comparing them on other peoples horses out hunting. It looks like all leather ones hold more securely. Only problem I have is they all seem very narrow... I'd like one that about 2 inches deep...

I have an elastic one and it does the job just fine. Have had it for three seasons, it gets dumped on whatever horse needs it and doesn't appear to have stretched. Only tend to use it for hunting and xc nowadays and its been fine. Only thing is, it rubs my super sensitive pony (but then EVERYTHING does on him lol) so stuck a sheepskin girth cover over it and haven't had a problem since. Saying that, I've never had a leather one, so no idea how they differ :)
