Hi guys

I've just bought a very fine TB & want some sort of strap to hold onto whilst i sort my balance out lol!! - he doesnt need a martingale - is a breast plate the way forward???

or any other suggestions

thanx in advance xx

Neck strap, cheaper then a breast plate just get an old stirrup leather and put it round is neck but secure the end with a rubber band :)

But failing this yeah a breast plate would work and you have the added security that your saddle won't slip back

A hunter breatplate would be perfect. Doesn't affect the horse other than stablise your saddle and the wither strap is in the exact right place to grab in an emergency! You can by them for under #20 off ebay too.

Breastplates are great. Wouldn't be without mine. Confidence giver and also great if you're hanging out of saddle doing awkward gates, riding out a shy etc.

On my first day out with the Mendip Farmers, some years ago, I was chatting with one of the Masters and said I was surprised that almost every horse, including my hireling, had a breastplate. Later that afternoon, as we toiled up the side of Cheddar Gorge, he turned back in his saddle and said "Now you see why!"

you can also use a flash noseband fastened from d ring to d ring on front of your saddle. it s a bit more like a handle though, and closer to the body than a neck strap. it also does not move at all. however, it was invaluable when sittng out some serious broncs, which was the reason i put it there.

i use a breast plate on both horse :)

it holds the saddle in place and i can attach running martingales to them if needed,

you should be able to get one from e'shall saddlery;)
